My 11 yo daughter developed a brain infection in Jan 08. SHe has had 8 cranial surgeries, the last a cranioplasty in Oct 08. We have done intesive rehab. She lost 50% of the function she had recovered in her R arm in June. She was thoroughly evaluated( CT, MRI, shunt series, EEG, echo cardiogram)and no cause for the loss could be determined. She regained the use following the cranoplasty. The neuro team suggested that the helmet she was wearing for protection irritated her brain and with the defect repaied, she regained function. She lost about 50% of the function again yesterday. We contacted the neuro team and again had her evaluated. Again, nothing was found. She has regained some use but it is not where it was. Is this a common problem following brain injury? It is very alarming because it took 5 months and the cranioplasty to regain what we had lost. Is there any research out there on this occuring or what to do to keep the pathway open and functioning properly?
