I was on Tegretol for a month when my doc did a blood test to check my enzymes, etc. He called me as soon as he had the results and said to stop the Tegretol, that my liver enzymes were twice the baseline.
So, now what? He is looking into an alternative drug, but I am just so bummed out as I was feeling a WHOLE lot better on Tegretol. I had been misdiagnosed for 20 years with "just depression" when it turned out to be a whole other animal. I was so thankful to finally get the real help I needed.
Now back to square one. Crying or Very sad

He mentioned Depakote and Lamictil. Any good experiences with these?

Depakote and Lamictal
Hello to you Cannoka,

I have also tried Depakote (sodium valproate in my case I gather it also comes in an acid form) had early blood problems ie red and while blood cell count.

But then came up with a drug related rash literlly all over me, so pdoc took me off the Depakote all returned to normal.

I was sad about this as the Depakote was working well.

However he put me on Tegretol, well that was not good, very poor adverse side effects of the mental type.

Then he tried Lamcital. Yipee, it has now stablised me and I know a peace which I doubt I have ever felt. Long may it keep working.

Remember though what works for one, may well not work for another. Those with Bipolar seem to be on different meds to each other. Although I do know of others who like me do well with Seroquel and Lamictal.

But of course it all goes back to what you and your pdoc decide to-gether after weighing up all the facts etc.

I hope that you are lucky enough to have a pdoc like mine who lets me give suggestions and then we discuss why it may or may not be a good suggestion.

I always follow his advise he knows more than I do. Plus he sees me in a different light than I might.

So the long and short of it, is to consult your pdoc about it.

Regards and good luck

On Tegretol
Hi:

I am on Tegretol now and it has worked wonders for me, up until now! For the past few months my bipolar monster has been rearing it's ugly head. I don't know...has the drug just stopped working? It sucks because I get the drug for next to nothing and I've been on others that have cost me upwards of $300 per month. On the other side of the coin; my doctor has yet to check my liver enzymes so that kind of freaks me out! Wow...I'll have to give her a call!
