Q: Teething with a Fever

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering how long it is normal for a child to have a fever with teething? Chandler has been running a fever off and on now for 2 days and has been cutting teeth like MAD.. we have had 2 in less than a week, and a third one is almost in. Is there a point at which I should worry and take him to see a doctor? Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,

Mary

I don't think it's anything to be concerned about unless he seems lethargic and completely uninterested in food. Obviously it's going to hurt to try to eat. Sucking on a bottle will probably make him hurt more depending where his most sensitive spots are. A sippy cup is usually the best way to give him a drink.

Give him plenty of fluids and keep him well-hydrated with either Pedialyte or Gatorade. You can give him the recommended doses of infant Tylenol and lots of cold wet wash clothes to chew on.

If you can obtain it, natural calcium drops for kids will help him a lot. (Dr. Christopher has one that you can probably get at your health food store.)

Hi there.. Thanks.

I had him to the doctor today and she is not convinced that the fever is from his teeth. She told me that if he still has one tomorrow morning to take him to the hospital and tell them what we talked about and ruled out and get a catheter done to see if he has a bladder infection. She thinks it could be that. Or Roseola (sp?) So we will just see what tomorrow brings.

Again, thanks.

Many doctors believe that fever is only coincidental with teething and that some infections just happen to come at that time. There is no proof either way. It is possible that there could be something else wrong with him, but I hope that there isn't.

Don't let the doctors "experiment" too much with him. Sometimes they can be a little too invasive and do more harm than good.

I wish you and your son all the best.

I hope he's doing okay! Catheters aren't fun. I hope he doesn't have to have one.

Thanks.. He is some tired tho with it. I did not think that they got so exhausted, oh well.. He was in bed last night at 7 pm and did not get up until 6:30 this morning. Very unsual for him as he usually goes around 8 or 9 and we hear from him around 5:30 or 6. Must need the sleep. Napped 2 hrs this morning and is in bed again now. My sleepy little Man.
