A family member has had addiction problems with various for about 16 years.
The past 6 years it has been and . He now has a mouthful of decayed teeth, and has had several pulled. He is on methadone but for his problem but keeps saying that it doesn't help his "severe" dental pain. Therefore, he buys off the street and takes that for his toothaches. Keeps putting off getting the rest of his teeth pulled. He is in his early 30's. I guess my main questions are: 1) Is it true that the methadone will not help the toothaches?
2) Will the work to relieve his pain while taking 120 mg of methadone a day? 3) Could he be using them together for some kind of "high?" Thanks for any help. Anndee

I am not sure about the methadone not helping his tooth pain? I know I have been on methadone at one point at 145 mg and it helps me with any pain Ive had. Of course, if its major pain, then its probally not gonna take all the pain away, but what it doesnt take away, it shouldnt be that bad to where you need to take other drugs. However, everyone is different but that is my experience. And also, when your on methadone it blocks other drugs. Which means, he would have to take a lot of the other drugs to even get a buzz, but the other drugs stil work for pain just not getting a big high, Hope this helped. Good luck

Your son probably does need the street drugs for pain relief. Methadone at the correct dosage does not have a pain relieving effect, especially not for severe chronic pain like decaying/abscessed teeth. The problem is that many dentists don't understand this and assume that if a patient is on MMT, they don't need any other pain medication. Your son needs to advocate for himself with his dental provider, and make sure he's getting the pain medication he needs. Also make sure his dentist understands the relationship between methadone and decreased saliva production (I lost most of my teeth due to this) so he can prevent more decay. I understand why many MMT patients are reluctant to deal with health care providers... some of them really look down on you and the "it's all your own fault" attitude is very hard to deal with. But he needs to get his teeth dealt with... the bad teeth are poisoning his whole body and affecting his health & wellbeing. Maybe his clinic can recommend an MMT-friendly dentist?

No methadone does NOT help severe pain!! such a misconception!
i have been on methadone for 12 years - my dose is 170mg.
and this is THE biggest misconception i get from medical doctors even ''specialists''.
no.
Methadone once taken for a year plus - sometimes more sometimes less, only the patient knows for sure his moment... the methadone is just the same as the heroin or whatever narcotic brought him to the methadone clinic in the first place. It''s just keeping him going. Throw in some new pain, like a hang nail? should be ok.
but tooth pain?
i can remember having tooth pain while doing 200$ of heroin, NO relief.
But 2 Vicodin? Relief.

Now i just had root canal and in the middle of ''didn''t know it could hurt this much'' pain.
Methadone helps the ever smallest bit - what does help me? - two 7.5 Percocets.

PLUS: most clinics are giving this Methadone that has an additive in it - an additive that blocks any other Narcotic agent from getting inside the neuro transmitters, an attempt to ''help'' the drug addict by making his using other narcotics not benefitial. But what happens after an accident? during dental work? when real pain comes our way? doctors here we take methadone? We are 85% then looked at as thieves and definitely as liars! Complaining of pain that does not exist.
That is actually why i got on Methadone - for the 4th time 12 years ago. Had gallbladder pain, no one did tests . all assumed i just wanted to get high. So being clean well over a year i had to go into a clinic to get methadone b/c i knew there i''d get pain relief every day without hassel. i even tested clean - had to be a mistakke they sauid. it was a sad day for me.
and the pain value of it lasted close to 2 years , until i had to keep raising it and raising it - until now i''m swimming in it and they switch to this great new methadone and im in such pain i cant stand it.

there is NO way to know if your son is lying.
to say otherwise is not a fair statement.

we are screwed when pain comes our way because 1.) we are never believed and 2.) even doctors see the dose of methadone and think oh they are covered pain wise. so not the case.
it''s actually the opposite and we need 3x the amount the average person needs for relief especially with the additive.

Methadone DOES work for Pain!! It's my pain relief miracle
I have been on Methadone Maintenance for PAIN relief and only pain relief for almost 6 years now...Starting out at 40 mgs. a day I am now up to 140 mgs. a day and am doing wonderfully in keeping my pain down to a 1-2 on a scale of 1 to 10. I have 4 ruptured discs in my back, and 3 slipped/1 of those ruptured as well (this just means the discs are torn open and have dried up! Hurts like hell..so methadone for pain really does work...BUT

If I get a toothache...hell NO it doesn't work...unless I take an ungodly amount to knock myself out OR take some of my husbands Oxycodones and even oxycodone or hydrocodone doesn't really help with tooth aches (nerve pain). I have literally had more relief from my tooth pain by dissolving an aspirin (REAL aspirin) or two on the aching tooth or teeth in question. Clove oil and Dent's gum (for big holes or broken off teeth) can be a lifesaver until you ncan get to a dentist!

So Methadone does work wonders for general pain, especially back and neck pain....and has relatively no side effects...some weight gain, consitpation...little annoying things, and yes you do have to take really good care of your teeth because of the saliva thingy.. I heard adding balsamic vinegar to your diet and brushing with baking soda and salt on your toothpaste can help alot. Most of the issue with drug users is the bad dental care they bring with them from their time using. Many people get to the clinic with less than ideal teeth...they begin to feel the pain once the heroin is gone or even METH will calm pain..I've known Meth heads that used crystal meth to treat their pain..I guess it works miracles on pain! Go figure?? But hey, everyone's different, we have to realize that what may be true for one person may not be true for someone else or others... Hope I helped!

Take care everyone
