A family member has had addiction problems with various for about 16 years.
The past 6 years it has been and . He now has a mouthful of decayed teeth, and has had several pulled. He is on methadone but for his problem but keeps saying that it doesn't help his "severe" dental pain. Therefore, he buys off the street and takes that for his toothaches. Keeps putting off getting the rest of his teeth pulled. He is in his early 30's. I guess my main questions are: 1) Is it true that the methadone will not help the toothaches?
2) Will the work to relieve his pain while taking 120 mg of methadone a day? 3) Could he be using them together for some kind of "high?" Thanks for any help. Anndee

I am not sure about the methadone not helping his tooth pain? I know I have been on methadone at one point at 145 mg and it helps me with any pain Ive had. Of course, if its major pain, then its probally not gonna take all the pain away, but what it doesnt take away, it shouldnt be that bad to where you need to take other drugs. However, everyone is different but that is my experience. And also, when your on methadone it blocks other drugs. Which means, he would have to take a lot of the other drugs to even get a buzz, but the other drugs stil work for pain just not getting a big high, Hope this helped. Good luck

Your son probably does need the street drugs for pain relief. Methadone at the correct dosage does not have a pain relieving effect, especially not for severe chronic pain like decaying/abscessed teeth. The problem is that many dentists don't understand this and assume that if a patient is on MMT, they don't need any other pain medication. Your son needs to advocate for himself with his dental provider, and make sure he's getting the pain medication he needs. Also make sure his dentist understands the relationship between methadone and decreased saliva production (I lost most of my teeth due to this) so he can prevent more decay. I understand why many MMT patients are reluctant to deal with health care providers... some of them really look down on you and the "it's all your own fault" attitude is very hard to deal with. But he needs to get his teeth dealt with... the bad teeth are poisoning his whole body and affecting his health & wellbeing. Maybe his clinic can recommend an MMT-friendly dentist?
