Q: Teenage breast exam ?

My 15 year old daughter had her annual physical for school. She is very active in sports and has to have one for school. This year she went to a new Dr. not our normal GP. This male Dr reached under her shirt and lifted her bra, when she jumped up asking what he was doing he calmly explained that he was doing a breast exam for breast cancer. Now, nevermind the fact that I think it's wrong to be doing that exam without a female present in the room, it seems wrong to me to be doing it to my teenager at all. Am I way out of line here? Would like some input before I take this any further. Thank you

No, he was out of line. First of all, this is not part of a normal physical exam; I only get a breast check at the gynecologist's office. Secondly, there should have been a female nurse present if that kind of exam was going to take place. I would report the man immediately to the school.

when i had my first breast exam i was 15 and a male doctor did it, but he had to have a female doctor in the room.

he was out of line and should NOT have done that. i would talk to someone at the doctors about it

I just finished my First year of Nursing and I know how to do a breast exam on someone. If what your saying happened in the way you said it happened, it sounds a bit weird to me. Normally if you were going to do a breast exam on someone theyd know, because youd tell them before touching them. Second, youd have them prepare, by putting a gown on or something. and third now-a-days they do like to have another female in the room, or have a female doctor/nurse practitioner to do the job. Im not to worried about the age, because you can never be to safe about checking for abnormalities in breasts but it definately sounds a bit fishy to me. I think he was a bit "careless" in his actions.

To me, it is a bit fishy as he should have informed the mother and / or the parents and than, your teenage daughter and than, do the exam, with their permission . Nowaday, you do not need a female present to do breast exams but the mother or parents should have been informed of it and a consent is needed.

I am a special therapist and I do breast exams with the therapies but I inform my patients / clients of it and never did anyone informed me that they did not want to. When I do therapy on a teenager, the mother and / or the parent is informed that I will be doing breast exam and none have told me no.

You should check this further.
