I have seen several different Chinese Medicine practitoners. I was looking for help with multiple diagnoses... chronic fatigue, bipolar disorder, amenorrhoea (lack of menses), multiple food sensitivities.
I worked, at different times, with two people who were Doctors of Chinese Medicine and one who was an acupuncturist. I was very interested & open to it, but it was still very esoteric. I couldn't really connect to it. What I really wanted was someone to help me learn how to take care of myself.
I have since taken it upon myself to learn more about it & it turns out that Chinese Medicine had exactly what I needed. I have learned a lot about what I can do on a day-to-day basis to stay balanced. It takes into consideration my individual constitution, my environment, the change of the seasons. It understands issues on a very subtle basis - how to treat the root cause - & also understands how your emotional states relate to physiological imbalances. I have improved considerably & have great faith in it. I think the initial problem was that I came across people who just wanted to stick needles in me & send me home with herbs, but didn't want to teach me what I needed to know. I think maybe that is just because that's what most patients expect. Maybe that is part of the difficulty that the West is having with it. It really requires you to play an active role in your own healing. If you're willing to take that on, though, it seems to have a lot to offer.
