Q: Tampons and virginity
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 17th, 2009
Hello,

I was wondering if you could give me an answer to something thats been worrying me for a while. Its probably just a stupid thing to worry about though!
Basically I want to be able to wear tampons. I've tried to insert one a few times now with no luck. I try to do it when I'm heaviest on my period and with a small sized tampon because I've heard that that helps, but they just don't seem to fit. I can fit a finger up there though, so how come I cant fit a tampon? I can feel theres something in the way, which I'm guessing is my hymen (I'm a virgin), and it feels kind of hard and that it will be hard to break, so thats another worry I have is that it feels like it would really hurt if I tried to have sex.
It would be nice if you could put my mind to rest and try to tell me why I can't seem to be able to wear a tampon!

Thanks.

Given the data you provided, it seems likely that the tampon you tried to insert was not the appropriate size for you. There are mostly three tampon sizes: normal, super and mini-tampons. You might want to try a mini or the smallest size you can find (these are the ones that are recommended for virgins).

Also, it might be a case that you are not relaxed and do not follow the direction of the vagina while inserting the tampon: you should lie down, relax and try to insert it up inside and towards the back. You might even want to practice inserting them when you don’t menstruate. Moreover, there are various forms of hymens and even rare kinds that are not susceptible for inserting tampons without breaking them. However, when you have your first sexual intercourse, nature will have its own course, with or without pain/blood (this is quite individual), so you should definitely not worry about this. You might want to discuss this issue with your family doctor or your gynecologist.
