tamoxifen & sun tanning Posted: 04-12-08 12:23pm
recently started a daily dose of tamoxifen
and understand that I can no longer lay in
the sun.
why? What exactly happens as far as
chemical effects on the skin as it is
exposed to sunlight.

Tamoxifen is known as antiestrogen, and
skin face is especially vulnerable to
reduced amounts of estrogen, resulting in
certain skin changes (skin is becoming
more thinner, fragile, dryer, like
menopausal skin appearance).
Also, it makes skin more vulnerable to sun
exposure and its harmful effects on skin
cells.
What type of breast cancer you had?

type of BC Posted: 04-15-08 10:13am
1 cm tumor directly behind my right
nipple. low grade ductal carcinoma in
situ.
6 chemo treatments followed by a bi
lateral mastectomy in January of this
year.
I made them take both breasts as a
preventative measure and a good decision!
My left breast had significant tissue
change since my last mammogram (July 07).
I am done with my tissue expansion and
waiting for my final implant surgery in
May. Fortunately for me I have one the
the best nationally known breast surgeons
right here in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Donna
Stahl. she has even treated a gorilla for
BC! Thank God for mammograms! My tumor was
so small and it's location so evasive, if
I would have waited until it could have
been "felt", I most likely would not be
here right now.
thank you so much for your reply. I am an
avid sunbather and this is going to be a
test for me. I always use at least an 8
spf, but will be sure to go with a higher
one from now on. I wish that I could say I
will not sun at all, but will make an
honset attept to cut back. I have many
flower gardens and a swimming pool and
love the outdoors.

I'm happy you had been diagnosed on time,
cause this always has effects on
prognosis.
Because of your sun sensitive skin, during
usage of Tamoxifen, and because of
spending a lot of time outdoors, you
should consider applying a sunscreen with
an SPF of 30 or more (if you normally
suffer a burn in 10 minutes without
wearing a sunscreen, a sunscreen with an
SPF of 30, will protect you for 10*30, 300
minutes)
Also, sunscreens that protect against both
UV-A and UV-B, are the best choice.
Limiting sun exposure and wearing
protective clothing are very important
part of sun protection program, too (avoid
or limit sun exposure, especially between
10 a.m. and 3 p.m.; wear a broad-brimmed
hat and clothes that cover your body)
Acctually, there are some scientific
evidences that regular exposure to
sunlight lowers the risk of developing
breast cancer, thinking about daily
sunbathing for short periods of time with
as much skin exposed as possible except
for the head and neck area which should be
protected with a hat. It is thought that
the cancer- protecting effect of sunlight
is related to its ability to produce
vitamin D in the body.
When exactly you gonna have surgery for
implants in may?

implant surgery Posted: 04-30-08 08:47am
May 16th is the date for the placement of
my permanent implants. I am anxious to get
rid of these tissue expandeers. I had my
last fill 1 month ago and I think that my
pecs have stretched about as far as they
are going to. Hopefully I will be able to
get a good night's sleep after these
softball-hard things are out of my chest!
Wish me luck!
Thank you for your replies. I am (was) a
sun worshiper. I am constantly in the sun
either in my flower beds or in my pool. I
always wear SPF but will up it from 8 to a
higher one. I cannot see myself staying
completely out of the sun, but I will
limit it. No more laying out for hours on
end for me. I have been riding to work in
my Jeep with the top off and my arms have
gotten a little pink wearing SPF 8 and it
only takes me 20 minutes to get to work!

You are welcome!
I guess is not so easy to tolerate
discomfort and pain associated with the
tissue expansion process.
I'm wishing you luck with your coming
surgery.
I hope you'll be in good hands and this
reconstruction process will be finished
excellent.
Will you have a nipple reconstruction a
few weeks after getting the permanent
implants?
