Oh my gosh I just had my third Synvisc injection and it has been horrible. Apparently I had a Baker's cyst (common with arthritis problems in knees) and didn't know it and it burst in my leg. My doctor thought it would be ok to have the third shot this morning and now I am in extreme pain and cannot bend my knee at all. I had the injections in my right knee before finally having it replaced and never had any problems. I am not sure Sinvisc is good. It didn't help my right knee and it is totally having awful rejections to my left knee. I am only 54 and had my right knee replaced in 07 and even though I am too young to have it, it has been AWESOME.

synvisc injections
As a breast cancer survivor, I am especially concerned about getting the injections which are scheduled for 4/20. I called my oncologist, waiting for his opinion, but after reading everything here I''ve made up my mind to NOT get the injections, not just because the substance being injected might migrate to other parts of my body, but because the treatment is supposed to stop the pain, not make the pain worse.

Hope for the best for all of you.

hobbling in DC
I have had three series of synvisc.. this last time, the third in 18 months.. was scary and painful.. for some reason, knees/thighs felt hard as rocks and could not bend legs..(I had both knees done at once).. very unusual since i had NO problems the last two times.. it has been a miracle treatment for me, til now... very difficult to get around.. the doc saw me right away last week, after the reaction, prescribed efflexor and told me to take it easy.. to use heat.. why would i suddenly have an adverse reaction.

Just had my first synvisc 1 day b/4 yesterday. the pain was no problem to me, also no swelling or other physically inhibitive side effects but became so dizzy yesterday had to come in and lay down, Still the same today weather and allergies could be contributing to this dizziness but feel it must be the synvisc, I''m not allergic to chicken or eggs. does anybody else have this reaction?

Synvisc knee replacement
Babador-
I missed your earlier post.. It was good to read that
your replacement has been awesome.. I''m gonna hold onto
that positive thought.. I need two & I suspect the
sooner, the better... I don''t like how small my world
is becoming by trying to accomodate the pain.

SYNVISC - CAUTION!!!!!
I had the Synvisc injections in March and I have had very serious reactions to the gel injections i.e. swelling, joint pain, high blood pressure, fatigue, sweats, fever, full body aches, hips and shoulders felt frozen, sed rate doubled, etc etc to name a few. My body seemed to reject the Synvisc from the very first injections. Now I am in a drug induced RA state and my hips and shoulders are so stiff and painful I take pain meds and prednisone just to move. Sed rates are double and labs show this to be an accute onset. Do your research before having the Synvisc injections! The RARE reaction can be life changing!!!!!!

synvisc side effects
Ok, I had second round of three synvisc shots (had them about 10 months ago for the first time) and I have been fine for all of them EXCEPT my last. Not only was it extremely painful but I have swelling, pain that keeps me up at night, redness and heat at the injection site and my doctor (over the phone) has told me that its NORMAL and to stay off it for the weekend and ice! I am very unhappy currently and am in a lot of pain, I am a teacher and need to be on my feet all day. Any suggestions for relief would be greatly appreciated.

I had the mega dose yesterday of Synvisc One. Last night and this morning, I'm a cripple. I can hardly walk and I can't sit. It's very painful when I try. I've had the 3 doses a year ago with no side effects. My doctor did not warn me that there would be pain, but told me to take it easy and just lay around and read or do crossword puzzles.

Previous years, with another surgeon, I've had similar injections called Supartz. Those were a series of 5 injections, but there were no side effects. That doctor had told me that he doesn't like to use Synvisc because it doesn't work as well as Supartz.

Naturally today is Saturday and I can't get ahold of my doctor so I'm trying to get ahold of the doctor on call.

Other posts mentioned about having some fluid removed. I wonder if I'll have to do that, but I don't think the doctor on call is going to do anything like that.

Luckily I'm retired (I'm a 65 year old woman) so I don't have to worry about going to work, but now I know what it feels like to be totally disabled.

I was surprised to see so many reactions to Synvisc. I think I will stick with Supartz in the future.

WARNING RE/SYNVISC ONE
It's been 3 weeks since my mega-dose of Synvisc One. The swelling has disappeared, but my knees still hurt when I bend them, like getting up or sitting down. I don't have any pain when I am laying on the couch or in bed. I go to the YMCA 6 days a week and cannot do the eliptical machine like I used to do. Now I have to do strictly treadmill and swimming. The doctor told me that it takes 4-6 weeks for the Synvisc to work. Right now I'm worse than when I went to the doctor in the first place. I absolutely do not recommend Synvisc One. I'd never take it again. It was a disaster!! I will take Supartz from now on even though I have to go 5 times for injections.

Synvisc
I had an injection of synvisc 4 days ago. It wasn't painful or anything. Walked out no problems. Each day following I have noticed increased pain and decreased weight bearing ability and inability to straighten. Is this what others are experiencing also?

synvisc one side effects
I had synvisc one injected 3 days ago by an orthopedic surgeon.I'm still in alot of pain but very little swelling. I can barely put weight on my knee, walking is very difficult and I also cannot fully straighten my leg. My other concern is that I am very small, 5'4" 100 pounds and I'm afraid it was too much medication for my frame. I have been resting, icing, elevating since the injection and basically doing all the right things but it's not getting better. I'm only 52 years old, and have always been in excellent health (working out everyday for hours and in great shape)until the arthritis set into my knee several months ago. I phoned my docs office and told the PA what was going on and he said to add heat and start riding an exercise bike! I'm afraid that will make matters worse and cause more inflammation. I'm frustrated and getting depressed since I haven't worked out in 5 months. I can relate to TkdTam's post and wonder how many other people out there are experiencing these problems.

Mulligan... you are telling my story. I'm your age, your size and have always been very athletic.. very active. Just finished the Synvisc 3 injections 2 days ago, I started experiencing like deep bone pain after the 2nd injection. The arthritis pain is essentially gone. Swelling basically gone. But this deep bone pain is dibilitating. It comes and goes. Very weird. I'm just hoping over the next few days this reaction will go away. I didn't work out at all this past week, but want and need to get back to the gym next week. Hopefully I'll be able to. Strange to trade one pain for another.

O.K. now three days out from my 3rd Synvisc injection. Feeling way way better. This is the best my knees have felt in years. They still aren't functioning at 100% but the pain has deminished probably 70%. Looking promising! Going to the gym tomorrow Smile

I just had a Synvisc shot today and have been vomiting for 3 hours! I called the doctor, he has never heard of nor has he ever had a patient vomit after a shot do this. He has ordered some compazine and I should take it after the vomiting has slowed down. Has anyone ever heard of this?

I had my first ever synvisc injection about 6 hours ago, and I just want to thank ouch101 for mentioning that they vomited afterward. I'm very hopeful that these injections will help me get back to an active life. It's just that at this moment I feel woozy and a little sick. Am hoping a nap will perk me up.

Synvisc Injections
I also had a night of vomiting and high fever after my second series (first week) injection of Synvisc.

My first series of shot six months ago made both knees swell horribly and they were painful for about 3 weeks. However, I also immediately beginning having hip pain - not able to lie on either side at night. The doctor said it was the bursitus sacs in my hips, but odd that they just started hurting almost overnight and not gradually and it was both hips at the same time. It was so painful I couldn't sleep at night - I am a side-sleeper. I also noticed my other joints has more pain then usual and I felt achy...but just thought it was because of winter.

The hip pain went away in about 4 months - around the same time the injection wore off in my knees. I still didn't put it together UNTIL last week after my second series of shots began...I not only vomited all night with a high fever, but I immediately had hip pain, and my joints became painful throughout my whole body, with the achiness.

Today, I am scheduled for my second injection...but I am cancelling...I finally put it together - the injections had something to do with the pain and swelling in my other joints and especially my hips along with the other side affects of fever, nausea and fatigue. I will be making an appt with my primary physician so that it will be at least documented in my records noting the adverse reaction that I am experiencing...I am concerned that whatever the makeup of Synvisc is...it is not natural and there may be unpleasant side affects down the road. I think I am going to regret ever getting the injections. -MerryJoy

Miserable
This is my third time getting the Synvisc injection in my left knee. I had a mild reaction to the one time shot two years ago, so I decided to do the three time shot instead this time. I will never take this again!! My knee is soooo swollen and extremely painful. The Dr. said that 1 out 0f 50 patients see this side effect due to the protein in it from the rooster comb. That is where they make Synvisc from. He said that they make a synthetic kind that I can try instead next time. Meanwhile, I got my shot on Friday and it is Sunday and I cannot take it anymore. Heading to the ER to get it drained.
