Q: Symptoms of vaginal bacterial infections
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 26th, 2009
I have had a thick white discharge for about a week. There is a distinct smell but I wouldnt say it's a bad odor. Recently that discharge has added a redish brown color to it. I have PCOS and so my period coming on was out because I have to take the pill in order to receive a cycle. My last cycle was end of April and lasted 3 days 4 including the brownish remnants. I am not consistant with birth control and I am not presently on them. What could this discharge be from?

A white vaginal discharge is most often related to vaginal infections. It is often associated with bad odor, too, but not necessarily. The bad odor is more often seen in fungal infections. Since the vaginal infection might be transmitted sexually it is very important that both you and your partner take the recommended medications if infection is confirmed. Otherwise, there is a possibility that your partner would give you back the infection again.

The reddish color you reported that appeared in the discharge might be due to small bleeding. The bleeding might be related to a menstrual period, but it might also be caused by mucosal damage due to the vaginal infection. If the blood coagulates there is a possibility that a brownish color might be added to the discharge.

You might want to visit your gynecologist for a physical examination that would also include examination of the discharge, both visually and microscopically. Your gynecologist might take a vaginal smear to confirm the bacterial infection and to rule out other possible and more serious causes for bleeding.
