Hi I have a year old daughter who is experiencing a foul odor emitting from her nose. She does not have a cold or anything. Could this be some sort of infection?

Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders Answer A6824
According to the data you reported (foul odor emitting from nose) your daughter might be experiencing rhinitis (nasal inflammation) or sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses). Both conditions are most often caused by bacterial or viral infections. The bad odor is from the degrading products of the inflammation.
Rhinitis is usually accompanied with a nasal discharge or post nasal drip. The sinusitis might be present with facial pain. The exact location of the pain would depend on which of the four sinuses is affected. Please note, that in small children the Eustachian tube (tube-like canal between the throat and the ear) is shorter than in adults, thus making spreading the infection from the throat and nose to the ears easier.
You might want to take your daughter to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. He might want to have an x-ray or other visualization method taken(CT scan, for example). A nasal and throat swab might be needed to detect the exact bacteria and the most useful medication.

When I was really little but older than a year. I had the most foul odor coning from my nose, I kept telling my mom I had sniffed up a piece of velvet ribbon. ( I can still see it's blue color in my mind ) Anyway she didn't believe me and as she is a nurse she tried to treat it like a cold. Ultimately we went to the doctor and I told him the same thing I had been telling her all along and sure enough he pulled out a nasty bit of blue velvet ribbon and the problem was solved. I know she's little but could something have come loose from a favorite toy that she has?
