Q: Symptoms of miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 18th, 2009
I am 5 weeks and 3 days pregnant, I had a miscarriage back in July and am now naturally very nervous and worried, this evening I have started getting lower right sharp abdominal pain, I have had no bleeding or discharge? I have looked on the internet and there seems to be conflicting info. some saying it implantation or ligament pain, other saying could be another miscarriage, could you give me a little more clarity on it please?

Miscarriage and Stillbirth Answer A7298
Usually the first symptom of a miscarriage is vaginal bleeding. The symptom ‘lower right sharp abdominal pain’ comes later. This type of pain can be a normal finding in many pregnant women. However, it could be a serious symptom of ectopic pregnancy. Lower abdominal pain without vaginal discharge should be investigated for an ectopic pregnancy. It could also be due to gas, round ligament pain, or a kidney stone pain. Round ligament pain generally subsides with a change of position.

Since you are just 5 weeks 3 days pregnant, please consult a gynecologist as soon as possible to find the cause. It is difficult to comment beyond this over the internet. Discuss these possibilities with your gynecologist. Hope this helps. Take care!
