Q: Symptoms of kidney stones and their treatment
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 4th, 2009
I am a 39 yr. old female who started having "kidney pain" in May of 2009. I thought I was having sympathy pains for a close relative that was dying from kidney cancer. The pain became debilitating, moved down my leg in to the groin area. Eventually went to Dr. was found to have a kidney infection. Was allergic to EVERY antibiotic. I tried to handle it on my own and with 'natural cures'. Did not work. Ended up in hospital, found kidney stones. Have been passing kidney stones since July 2009. But, my urine is the color of tea, it is foamy, blood in urine, and the pain is worse. I have unintentionally lost 20 lbs., and feel constantly tired and nauseated. Also have strong metal taste in my mouth. I liken the pain/contractions to child birth. I literally feel like I'm 'shutting down'. Both Dr.s recognize and see protein in my urine and blood. One says this is just how it is when you have had stones (which I didn't have a lot of according to mri's in July) and the other says there is nothing

The symptoms you reported (kidney pain, blood and proteins in urine, pain radiating in the groin area) are just what are expected when kidney stones are present. The kidney stones are known to damage the wall of the ureters when they pass. The damaged wall is more susceptible to infection, which often accompanies kidney stones.

The pain is one of the strongest pains that a person can experience. The only way to get rid of the pain for good is to expel the kidney stones. This is a painful process that might be repeated many times, depending on the number of kidney stones. The number of kidney pain attacks might be even bigger if the stones start expelling, but then return back to the kidneys.

You might want to have an additional ultrasound examination of the kidneys and the bladder to be sure that there is no other more serious condition.

Urinalysis would also be preformed. Since there are several types of kidney stones based on the substance they contain most, it might be a good idea to examine the stones once they are expelled to try to find out what are they made of in order to decrease the intake of that particular substance.
