Q: Symptoms of IBS
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 22nd, 2008
Lately, I have been experiencing alot of stomach pain, at least in the colon. I've been having this for about three weeks, no matter what I eat I get indigestion with a desire to use the bathroom but rarely actually go. I have a bowel movement everyday, and oftentimes it's normal, but sometimes its diarrhea. When I have a bowel movement, it temporarily relieves my indigestion.

I really don't wanna continue having this problem, and doctors dont really seem to be doing anything. What should I do?

According to the symptoms you described such as stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhea, and the fact that your mother has IBS ( Iritable bowel syndrome), you might be experiencing the same problem. Genetics or heredity may play a role. By definition IBS affects the large intestine and it causes cramping, bloating, and a change in bowel habits.Certain people have constipation, diarrhea, or both. Abdominal pain and discomfort last at least 12 weeks. There are no specific tests for IBS, but there are tests recommended for any intestinal problems like stool sampling tests, blood tests, X-rays and an abdominal ultrasound for a start. What are the things that make symptoms worse? Have you noticed any changes when eating a large meal or high fat meals, or chocolate, milk, carbonated beverages? Also stress, medications, sometimes fruits and vegetables may lead to more stomach discomfort in certain people..Symptoms can be controlled with diet, stress management or medicines. It is best to discuss the symptoms with your doctor.
