Q: Symptoms of depression and its treatment
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 4th, 2009
Proberly the same question that you've been asked so many times but i'm to scared and ashamed to see my doctor.
I don't know if i'm depressed?
I know all about depression lots of my friends/people have suffered from it and some still are. I've been researching about depression ever since i was 13 i'm now 19.
I was never like my friends at school, i'd get through the days being miserable for no reason. I've never had confidence/self esteem so making friends has never been easy for me and still isn't.
When i was 15/16 i suffered from self harm and i attempted committing suicide twice. The smallest things will get me down and it'll feel like the end of the world.
Right now i don't have a job and i can't find one, i live with my family that i don't really get on with, i have no friends because i have no money to go and see them. Also for the last few months i've lost weight because i don't feel like eating, i have no energy and i feel miserable all the time.
What do you think?

The symptoms you reported (low confidence/ low self-esteem, feeling miserable, feeling that you have no energy, loss of appetite), as well as the previous history of self-harm and two attempts of committing suicide might indicate that you are experiencing depression.

Depression is a mood disorder characterized with low moods and an aversion to activity. There are several types of depression, including: major depressive disorder, dysthymia, bipolar disorder, and cyclothymia. All of these disorders need a longer period of observation by a psychiatrist in order to be diagnosed properly.

The treatment would be decided depending upon the type of disorder. Perhaps the most difficult part would be to admit that you have depression and to take the medications as recommended.

In the end, please consider that the teenage period is hard for many. It is a period when you try to reach a certain image that the society expects from you. It might put more pressure than a young person can cope with. If no depression disorder is diagnosed, then you might want to visit a psychotherapist to help you with the low self-esteem and to improve your social skills.
