Q: Symptoms of a prolonged menstrual period
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 19th, 2009
Hi, i've been on the cerezette contraceptive pill for over a year and havnt had a period for that amount of time untill recently...
i put it down to being careless and often forgetting to take it, but i've still been having sex with my partner. about 3 days after my period i noticed i've started 'spotting' in a dark brownish colour and have been for 3-4days now. I'm worried as ive read alot of things that associate this with pregnancy???
is it possible that it could just be my body adjusting to recently having a period after not having one for so long?
i really just want to know what its most likely to be as being pregnant would really not be a good thing for me at 18

thanks

Menstruation Answer A7571
Given the data you provided (brown discharge three days after the end of the menstrual period), it seems likely that you might be experiencing a prolonged menstrual period.

The brown color usually comes from blood that was exposed to oxygen for longer period and was thus more oxygenated. The reason why you lost more blood than usual might be because you stopped taking the birth control pill. It is common to have withdrawal bleeding (heavy and sometimes prolonged bleeding) after not having a period for several months. The body usually needs time to adjust to the normal body hormonal production.

You might want to wait for the next menstrual period. If you experience the same symptoms or the bleeding does not stop in the next couple of days, then you might want to visit a gynecologist for a physical examination and hormonal laboratory tests.
