Q: Symptoms of a possible blood disorder
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 11th, 2009
I started having "abdominal" pain apx 6 months ago. It was very localized, almost in a pinpoint location. I went to my PCP and followed up with GI. I am scheduled to have an endoscopy later this month but only bc no one seems to know what it is, and it's in the general area of my stomach. I eat fine, foods don't bother me at all. I had nausea for a short time, but that went away. I know how pain under my right rib, left rib, around my belly button, my lower back on both sides and right on my spine. My left knee is extremly painful and my right hurts too. I've had aching in both my calves. I feel fatigued all the time and no energy. I do notice a slight twitch in my hands in the evening as well. I just genrally feel lousy every day. And so far no one can offer me any explanation. I'v had CAT scan and US, both were negative.
I'm miserable and this pain is taking over my life and limiting what I can do.
I appreciate ANY thoughts!! or direction as to what to do next!
thanks!

Blood Disorders Answer A6589

The symptoms you reported (widespread pain throughout the body: under ribs, around belly button, lower back and knees) are not enough for a definitive diagnosis to be given. It seems possible that the various locations of the pain might indicate that not only one organ is affected, but that the problem may possibly be associated with various disorders in the blood.

No results from blood tests were mentioned. You might want to have blood tests. A complete blood count might indicate the presence of inflammation and possibly infection. An electrolyte imbalance might be one of the possible causes, too. It seems likely that low calcium and magnesium might cause pain in the calves and twitching in the hands as you described.

Depending on the results, you might need to visit a gastroenterologist or rheumatologist.
