Q: Symptoms of a miscarriage
asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 15th, 2008
I found out I was 7 weeks pregnant on July 5th and then on Friday 11th I had some slight cramping and brownish discharge, this increased to bleeding that night and I have bled on and off since then (not as much as a period but enough to worry). I have an emergency scan booked for tomorrow morning, I still have the nausea, swollen breasts etc and I have lost no clots. What are the chances of my seeing a heartbeat on the scan tomorrow. How would I know the difference between a miscarriage and a treatened miscarriage.Surely if I had lost my baby there should be more blood and tissue etc as I am nearly 9 weeks pregnant now...

If the fetus is still alive the heartbeats should be seen on the ultrasound scan.

As a threatened abortion is considered any womb bleeding seen during pregnancy prior to viability that has yet to be assessed further. At investigation it may be found that the fetus remains viable and the pregnancy continues without further problems.

An inevitable abortion is when the fetal heart beat has stopped and the cervix has already dilated open, but the fetus has yet to be expelled. This usually will progress to a complete abortion.

A complete abortion is when all products of conception have been expelled. Products of conception may include the trophoblast, chorionic villi, gestational sac, yolk sac, and fetal pole (embryo); or later in pregnancy the fetus, umbilical cord, placenta, amniotic fluid, and amniotic membrane.
