Q: Symptoms of a hiatal hernia
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 23rd, 2008
I am just curious, I was told that I have a hiatal hernia. I was given an upper endoscopy, and that is how it was found, but a few years passed and I had an upper gi, and it showed no sign of a hiatal hernia. The only symptom I have is pretty much constant belching, especially after I eat, and especially after high carb food. I belch constantly all day long. I take aciphex, so I dont suffer from any acid reflux, unless I miss my pill. Why would the upper gi show no hernia? And, if I don't have a hernia why am I belching? Also, most importantly, I am in the process of doing everything it takes to recieve the gastric bypass surgery. I have been told by a couple drs that the surgery would inevitably help the burping because it would eliminate the hernia, and cause weight loss which would relieve pressure on my diaphraghm. Is this true? If I just burp and don't have a hernia, will the surgery make the burping worse?

Stomach, Ulcers, Gastric Bypass Answer A4793
The list of diseases or conditions you gave like IBS, gastritis, obesity, underactive thyroid, hiatal hernia, indicates that you are experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms and difficulties such as belching or burping. A procedure like an upper GI may diagnose problems in the esophagus, stomach, or first part of the small intestine. As you probably know, hiatal hernia is a condition when the upper part of the stomach bulges through an opening in the diaphragm. It may or may not be shown with an upper GI procedure, but a symptom like acid reflux that you have when you miss the pill Aciphex, shows a probability of a hiatal hernia. Obesity is another factor that provokes the same symptoms. So, if you are overweight and can`t lose pounds with a healthy diet or exercise, surgery is an option to lose weight quickly. And if you lost weight probably the pressure on the diaphragm will be smaller, and the symptoms relieved.
