Itchy hands, feet, knees & elbows
I woke this morning at 3 am with itchy hands and feet. They itched so bad they were on fire. I felt bumps on my fingers that look like tiny blisters. My fingers and knuckles were the most itchy and the palms of my hands burn. They are swollen and tight feeling too. My feet are itchy from the top of the big toe down to my ankle, the bottom of my feet are red and sore. The back of my ankle is now itchy along with my elbows and knees. I have bi idea what's going on. A couple days ago my left palm was on fire but it went away so I didn't think anything of it. Now I have bumps on my fingers and my hands are itching and on fire. Nothing I've tried is relieving this pain.

This disease is called dyshidrotic eczema or pompholyx (same)
Hello folks, sounds like we are all in the same boat.... mostly. I have been suffering with this disease for over 7 years, with only 2 months of remission granted. The name of this disease is "dyshidrotic eczema" or "pompholyx". The origin is different for everyone, that's why it's so hard to nail down a cause & then a cure. I've been to more specialists than you can imagine, suffered every type of "therapy" conceivable, even had steroid shots injected directly into the soles of my feet. Talk about painful.... My hands and feet are simply covered, and where there used to be a process, i.e., itching, then the symmetrical blisters, then the peeling, then the hardening, I now suffer all these symptoms simultaneously. It's no picnic and has changed my life considerably. After spending time & money & money & time, I realized that every new treatment was a shot in the dark, and finally, a physician friend was totally honest with me and said that doctors simply do not have a definite cause, no cure, and the only way to get through it was to treat the symptoms as best you can. Wish I would've known that before I tried all these painful treatments, turned my diet upside down etc. My symptoms occurred after a fine needle biopsy of my thyroid (FNA). I had/have a few suspicious thyroid nodules that needed looking into. After the biopsy, I awoke the next day to symmetrical bumpy redness and swelling around the thyroid area on my neck. The following days the rash appeared symmetrically on my chest, then arms, then palms. A week later it was also on the soles of my feet. I have suffered ever since. In my specific case, it has to be related to the FNA, as I've never suffered from allergies of any type, nor have I ever had any form of eczema or skin problems. I have told my story to several specialists, and they just look at me. That's it. Dumb face, then on to whatever else. Like I don't know my body! Grrr! I have lost my job. I have lost so much of my life. I can't be the wife & mother I once used to be as daily chores are near impossible most days. I miss events for my kids because I can barely walk. It's horrible. I am now completely bedridden with this and unfortunately, after trying everything one can imagine, am awaiting a motorized wheelchair approval from my insurance company. I don't want to scare anyone, as I said this disease is different for everyone, what didn't work for me, may actually help one of you. I have been told by many in the field my case is extremely extreme, and that they'd never seen DE or pompholyx onquite this level. Yay me. I'm a little over 40 and I feel like this is what I have to look forward to for the rest of my life. It's daunting to say the least. My pain specialist has diagnosed me with CRPS, or, "Chronic Reactive Pain Syndrome". Aside from the blisters, this disease is very similar to dyshidrotic eczema and I often wonder if they are correlated somehow. Look up CRPS & see if the symptoms fit your cases as well. CRPS can be treated but also has no "cure". This is an overlooked disease, you won't find many research studies being conducted. The reason I'm told, is because no one actually dies directly from this, and the pharmaceutical companies won't make any money off a cure, only on treatments. So, basically, we're all left to suffer. Nice. I have been on morphine for the resulting pain for the last 4 years, and I also receive a spinal block once a month. It doesn't help much, but my Dr. feels like he needs to be doing something. I wish it were something so simple as diet, or an allergy, and most are told this by their well meaning physicians. Heck, they have to tell you something, right? I have been in a support group for this, and I have yet to meet anyone who changed their diet, or discover a contributing allergy, and then found continous relief or a cure. They might temporarily relieve symptoms, but never cure it. Sometimes, it just mysteriously goes away by itself, those are the lucky ones! Jealous. But, so far, and unfortunately in my case, there seems to no end in sight. I wish everyone luck & hope that no one else suffers from this on my level. I thought 7 years of suffering was a long time until I met someone whose had this over 20. Puts things into perspective a little, eh?

Does anyone have an answer on this. I just developed these exact symptoms this past week. The itching is unbearable, but the pain and swelling in my feet is the worst part. I am a very active person, and just walking is painful.

Carrie, I'm a 31 year old SAHM and am currently going through the exact same thing you're describing. It started when I woke up last Sunday morning with every single joint in my body in EXCRUCIATING pain. I could hardly walk or grab things. Wednesday morning I woke up to my joints improving but I had VERY swollen hands, feet and knees and my skin feels hot to the touch. Also, my lips and nose seem to be "fat" feeling but don't appear to be swollen. Even on the hottest, most humid California day I've always been able to put my wedding ring on but my hands are so swollen that I can't. Yesterday I developed a rash and as a day wore on it got itchier and itchier. I had the HARDEST time getting to sleep last night. When I woke up this morning it felt like I was walking on hot ketchup packets. Very painful. My hands and feet look like they're going to pop at any moment. I went to the doctor yesterday. He recommended blood tests for lupus and RA. Also, I have Reynauds. I've had it for about 2 years. So we'll see what the results of the blood tests are. In the meantime, he has put me on prednisone for a week. I'm hoping it will help for now. This is becoming unbearable! But I'm glad to hear I'm not insane and there are others who can relate. Thanks for posting this.

burning feet and hands
Have any of you had a MRI? I experienced such extreme heat in my feet and hand with hyper sensitivity to anything. The pain was so extreme and appeared to be out of nowhere. Years later and every specialist and test avail. it appeared anyway I tried a new PPO and she asked the results of my MRI.. The only test I had never had... SO, within seven days we found out I had severe spinal stenosis in my neck. Fast forward a few years later I had two vertabrae removed and new ones made out of my hip bone. They found spurs were much more severe and actually dangerous growing into my spinal cord. The stenosis was also worse then expected. I woke up and the first thing out of my mouth was how wonderful my legs felt. It had taken the preasure off of my spine and I felt great. Unfortunately for me in 6 years it came back. I haven't had the surgery again yet but I will as soon as I find a doctor will to do it again. I want my life back.. Good luck....

Fever, rash, joint pain
I have just recently developed a itchy, blotchy rash on my arms, feet, legs. The rash is not a raised rash or blistering. The next day, I developed joint pain in every joint. Mostly in my left wrist and fingers. The joints are also slightly swollen. The night before I had the rash, I had a low grade fever that went away overnight. I also have a very stiff neck. The doctor said I probably am having some kind of reaction to the sun. Two days before the rash, I went on a long bike ride. I'm on Tegretol for seizures and that can make you sensitive to the sun. I'm now on a steroid. This is my first day. I'm a little better. I've had blood work done and am waiting for results. I'm hoping this is a one time thing and only a reaction to the sun. It's very scary.

Swelling of top of the feet, hands and itchiness
OMG: Swelling began in 1986 while I was a freshman in college. It started with one foot, then moved to the other foot. Now my feet swell so bad that I literally have 3 different sizes of shoes in my closet. Over the years I've noticed swelling in my hands and arms too. Recently the reactions have resulted in swelling of my tongue and have resulted in 2 emergency visits to the hospital. One doctor says its the heart. The heart doctor says its my lungs. The lung doctor says its my heart. However, I have always suspected something more complex. At one time I would feel better after a cycle of antibiotics. My regular doctor prescribed water pills, but now they fail to reduce the swelling. I am scared of what will happen if I don't get my arms around this. Thank goodness for this website. I thought I was losing my mind.

Mystery condition - red,swollen , itchy hands,soles of feet.
I am 77 years old and have been suffering with swollen, red, itchy hands and soles of my feet for several months. Dr.says "allergies' and I am in line for tests. Somehow I don't think it is allergy-related. It seems to come on even if I have avoided all my known allergy triggers - just out of the blue.Am taking Reactine, which has helped some, but it won't go away. The itching is the worst -cortisone -based creams work only temporarily. Even if it's only one finger,it drives me mad!Hard to do much with red, swollen hands. I am a weaver and spinner - never have had any problems with fibres or dyes. Hope someone comes up with a solution for us all. Have also had slight fever and chills while experiencing this ,but not always.

I have finally gotten relief, don't know if it is temporary. Reactine plus Zirtac is working. Elderly people's dosage of Reactine is one-half tablet. I took a whole one at first and was very uncomfortable "More is not always better" I am also trying to avoid known allergens in my diet and hopefully ,being seen at an allergy clinic soon.Sitting with your foot in a bowl of ice water at 3:00 am is not how I want spend my nights. Good luck to everyone.

Could be possibly Fibromyalgia
I hate to say this but, I have had these symptoms off and on for 20 years of my life...I only recently was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia ---and the symptoms are subsiding with a prescription medication called "Savella" ---not gone, but MUCH, MUCH better.

Hope this helps.

Hi, I developed these symptoms after a root canal. It was miserable. I eventually had extensive auto immune testing done and other tests. INitially the docs thought it was an allergy, but have determined its not, but they never diagnosed me, said I must have had a blood virus. However, these symptoms keep reoccurring. I just returned from a flight and my hands are on fire right now. Still no diagnosis. All the conditions described here are kind of close, but not an exact match. I have suspected fungus, I did believe I had an acutoimmune condition, my mother has lupus, but I do believe the dr that I don't after the large quantities of blood I gave. Exercise and diet seems to help. good luck.

First time through, I also had a symmetrical rash on my face.

I also get the same itchy burning sensation on my ears to this day with the welts.

The welts look like mini lyme disease sores. Red hives with a little white center.

OH - I will absolutely never willingly take prednisone again.

one thing I've observed here is we have experienced these symptoms in the last 3 or so years - it is recent.

Many of us seem to have started experiencing these symptoms after some sort of surgical procedure.

some thing to think about?

Swollen hands and feet with red measles-like rashes/sore throat
I got a similar case that's why I found this forum. I woke up 3 days ago with swollen hands that are slightly itchy. The feeling is like I have had the palms of my hand massaged with an electronic vibrator. Then after 5 hours I started to have some fever, I didn't know what the temperature was but it was hot enough to cause some chills. The next day my hands started to develop rashes and the soles of my feet followed suit. Plus my throat also hurts like I got throat infection. I thought it was measles because I have been recently exposed to someone who has measles. I have complete MMR shots and I had those shots as an adult (got it when I was 27 and I am 30 now) so I am not sure if contracting measles is even possible. As of this writing (it's the 3rd day) the rashes are barely visible on my hands and feet and my throat improved a little.

My grandmas has a rash, now swollen hands, feet and knees.
My grandma started off with a rash on her hands and she kept thinking it was a new cleaner she used or laundry detergent, and we even thought maybe the kitten, all allergic reactions ideas. We convinced her to see a doctor and eczema was mentioned with some medicine that was thought to help. Now she has swollen hands, feet, and knees. She has become very weak and it is hard for her to do anything. We just took her to the doctor again and she will be admitted for the night so they can find out what is wrong, bringing up that fluid might be a factor for the swelling. I decided to check the symptoms online and found this. Most of what was said here sounds similar, but it seems difficult for doctors to figure out and find a cure. I was hoping to find some answers. I will pray that doctors find the knowledge to help my grandma and all of you.

Well it has been about a month since I wrote about my grandmas symptoms. She was in the hospital for 8 days and with test after test they found out that she has a disease called dermalomyositis, which deals with the skin and muscle. This is caused by a primary cancer that has reached the bones, and that lead them to discover she has stage 4 breast cancer. The hard part about all this is that it came so quick, but the doctors had the knowledge to find the cancer before it reached the organs. Even though these are both incurable at the moment, there are drugs to stop the cancer from spreading and chemo, which she just started today. She is strong and I believe with the support and love from family and God, she will pull through this!!

Itchy hands and feet - swollen if rub
Well folks... It is around 2h30 in the morning. For the past few months, i started having hives. My hands and feet become itchy, like a burning itchy sensation. I put cream that i used last summer for poison ivy. It seemed to do the trick for a long time but tonight... no such luck. hand that i could not stand and of course, scratch, is now swollen. Scared to death this is a serious issue BUT if i look at my life right now...

1) Going through a separation
2) Financial stress
3) Court tommorow for my client
4) Afraid of the repracaution for my kids (separation)
5) trying to keep my home in the process...

Am i under stress? HELL YA.

I truly believe that my body is reacting to what i'm going through. The body and the mind are connected big time. Once i'm separated, i want to take the time to meditate and take care of this body that has been sooo very good to me. We are lucky and don't appreciate what we have. I no longer want to focus on the negative. Only the positive in my life. MY BOYS, MY BEAUTIFUL HOME AND MY LIFE... WE'RE NOT HERE LONG ENOUGH. Take care of YOURSELF. Sit down and think of all the things in your life that gives you stress; things that don't make you feel good. CHANGE THEM. That's my number one goal for 2013.

I feel better already!!!

I am so glad to see I'm not alone. I am a 37 year old female. I first had these symptoms in my early 20s ans it started with my lips and weirdly. My forehead...now years later it is mostly my hands and feet and still my lips. I have a feeling it's an allergic reaction to something but have nothing to base that on. I will be going to the doctor to rule out any autoimmune disorders but it sounds like this is just something that happens for no known reason sometimes. I guess there are worse things but I would really like to have a diagnosis. I just feel so much better to know that I am not the only one. Some of you fit my symptoms exactly! Itchiness, swelling, pain and hot to the touch. I have noticed if I don't itch it it doesn't swell and cause pain but it's nearly impossible as it itches so bad.
