My 21 month old daughter has had a fever for the past 2 days accompanied by a painful swollen gland on the left side of her neck that we noticed yesterday evening. We took her to the ER today and they did a cursory check-up and gave her a diagnosis of adenitis, saying that it may be a viral infection and swollen lymph nodes, along with advice to follow-up with her pediatrician tomorrow. They recommended giving her motrin and tylenol concurrently for the fever and the pain. As the day has progressed we've also noted a rash developing on her feet and slowly coming out on her hands as I type this. As I've looked online I've seen several possibilities (some ok and some not so ok). We spoke with a family member who is a physician and they believed it could be hand foot and mouth disease. I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen similar symptoms in their infant and can give some advice to/shed some light for before we visit the pediatrician tomorrow.

It does sounds like it could be hand foot and mouth disease. It is a very common childhood disease. One of the children I cared for had it once and that is exactly how she was and how it came out on her. Good luck. I am sure all will be fine.

Thanks!
Your answer is very comforting. I was wondering if she was having an allergic reaction to the two medications she was taking as her rash appears to be very itchy and most of the descriptions of hand-foot-mouth that I read seem to say that the rash isn't itchy. She has yet to have any mouth irritations either. Could it be something else? Just a thought...

There are chances that it could be something different, but the best thing to do is to let the doctor have a look. They know best. I am thinking that if it is a reaction, try benadryl. If the rash goes away and she is not itchy, then you could be right about it being a reaction. Everything is trial and error with babies eh? My son recently had Roseola and there is nothing that can be done for that. He was just an unhappy little man. Good luck at the doctors. Let me know how you make out.
