it will last a few weeks i had it but my doctor gave me mediction for my bowel and that took it down. so my advise would to get some laxatives and your tummy will go flat. you get a lot of gas and not good bowel movements after surgery.if you are constipated make sure you do this a few days before reunion clean out bowels and you should have nice flat tummy. heather
GetInMyBelly - Prior to surgery I had dull ache under right ribs. But when I had attacks they were around my belly button and would radiate through to my back. The attack pain I have not had since surgery, but under rib pain comes & goes, but it has only been a week today since surgery.
GallBladder Surgery :how long till swelling goes down?
MY SYMPTOMS 2/10 thru 10/11:
Before surgery I had 1-2 times a week pain starting under bottom v edge of ribs moving through chest and back up to a tightening or my jaw and then down my left arm. I could not breath easily pain was worse then natural child birth normally ending with me in floor vomiting or dry heaving and poof pain was gone.. Attacks came did not matter what I ate or did not eat at all that day, anxiety, or rest did not seem to play a part in it bring one on. Always tired. No energy.
I gained weight 70 lbs over year. Found thyroid was not working. levothyroxine 175 mcg a day.
Diet 1200 calories a day no sugar, low fat (still use some salted butter), no white grains or flour. Always tired, no energy.
Joints hurt, getting harder to walk ...feet feel like stepping on tacks with every step.
Demanded family doctor help I was at point of suicide. Now 253 lbs, crying all the time because I could not and did not have energy to move. Ashamed to be seem.
prescribed Cybalta 60mg.
well crying stopped but still have very symptom I have had for more then a year . Pain has not gone away but not crying because of it just trying to find reason for it.
MY "Miracle" I HOPE
I was ultra sounded and found to have numerous gall stones one blocking the duct.
DAY 1: I received lasoscopic surgery ( 4 small incisions) on Tuesday 11 am had some trouble with anasigia (not sure what it was I was asleep)but went home by 6 pm. Slept well for 12 hours with pains pills every 4 hours ( TY son your my angel).
DAY2: WOW was a little sore but felt fine went to foot ball game to watch my son play , tired and very very swollen/ hard on belly area under breast to belly button, incisions look good but , no drainage.
DAY 3:WOW on top of the world feel great and can eat any thing in small amounts. Did light house work , no vacuuming but did do some hand mopping on knees. Still no bowel movement so will take stool softener ( as suggested in previous post) . Swelling in stomach area is almost unbearable. Hard to bend over belly is so big. Wondering at this points if I was impregnated with an alien baby.
Day 4: woke up to SHARP stabbing pains very low abdominal, stumbled to bathroom , maybe gas pains? Will buy GAS EX TODAY! Feeling refreshed, took meds and wait to eat till lunch, feel fully awake now with medium energy. Walking still painful. Still taking thyroid meds ( 30 days till tested again gall badder can effect this) and Cymbata (30 days till see doc for recommendation) The little hold me together strips are beginning to peal away some thank God because I have blisters under them and they burn and itch!
How long before swelling is gone LOL? and HOW LONG before the strips fall off (after care said do not remove for 7 days or fall off)
Goodness I hope soon ...will keep you up dated
HUGS and prayers you all feel better VERY soon!
I hope you're still doing well So far my story sounds similar to yours, at least on the recovery side. My symptoms leading up to surgery were different ... evidently my GB "full of stones" had been sucking my energy away for about 3 years. I'm in my mid fifties and I went from being very energetic from morning till night, to barely being able to drag myself out of bed in the morning and lost all interest in things I once enjoyed. I'd go to bed tired and wake up tired. My eyes were always sleepy feeling even when I wasn't sleepy. I had my gallbladder out last Wednesday.
Day 1: checking in at the hospital 6:30 am and was home before noon. Overall, felt very good! Was up walking around without any pain. Of course I was taking pain medication every 4 hours (on the bottle it said take 1 or 2 every 4 hours ... I was taking 1).
Day 2: Woke up about 3:30 for pain meds and went back to sleep. Woke again at about 5:30 am and WOW! Was wide awake and ready to get up so I did! And stayed up. On days I don't have to go to work I was doing good to make it out of bed by 8am and then I would only make it as far as my easy chair where I would nod off another hour or two. Then about 10:30 or 11 I'd get up and try to do something with the day. By mid afternoon I'd start feeling pretty good, but without much energy. Day 2 was excellent, but I didn't get my hopes up. It was just one day after all, and thought maybe it was just a fluke.
Day 3: WOW again! Pretty much a repeat of day 2, except that night I started feeling some pain I hadn't felt the first 2 days. But I didn't care! It paled by comparison to the gall bladder attacks and besides I knew this would go away.
I'm at the end of Day 5 now and the pattern continues. I'm up and out of bed even though I'm taking time off from work to recover. I'm "sort of" working from home but not pushing hard at all. Just staying busy.
It's starting to look like I may be getting my life back. I was treated for sleep apnea (then taken off the treatment by a more qualified specialist) and depression in an attempt to pull me out of my funk. And now it's looking like it was related to the gall bladder. The timing is about right. I had my first attack a little over 3 years ago but didn't know what it was: about 40 minutes of intense pressure just below the rib cage above the belly button. Had a few more of those in the last few years then had an attack that lasted about 2 days (not as intense as the others, but it lasted TWO DAYS.) That one sent me to an immediate care center where I was scheduled to meet with a gastro internist the next day, and GB ultrasound the day after. It wasn't long after that I was meeting with a surgeon and we set a date.
The world is looking brighter now than it has in a long, long time.
I'm so glad I stumbled on this blog. I plugged in a question to 'ask jeeves' wondering how long my belly would be swollen. It's been 9 days now and it's so big I can barely reach the sink. So many things I did not attribute to a bad gallbladder like weight gain and loss of energy. I'm only 47 but felt 87. Doc wasn't sure it was the gallbladder since my complaints weren't that of a bad gallbladder according to him. I haven't required as much sleep, my appetite has decreased and I sleep much better. I've done more on my week of recovery than I've done in the past 6 months! So glad that sucker is gone. Once he pulled it out he found it to be inflammed with several stones and a huge one stuck in the duct. Just wish my tummy would go down. Not constipated so I'm not sure why it's so big.
I had my gallbladder removed last Wednesday so I am on day 10 now. I feel great except I feel and look pregnant (belly wise). I have my follow up with my surgeon today to have y staples removed and asked him when the swelling would go Down cause there is more now then there was on day 1 & 2... what?? I feel like I have a Buddha belly and it happens every time when I have a meal or when it's super Hott out and I'm not in my air conditioned room?!? Aside from that I feel great and no side effects from foods as I just started back on Atkins.

My gall bladder was removed in august 2012, and i was alright after the surgery but three months later my belly size increased and has not come back to the previous size since then. I did not gain any weight only belly which looks too bad. please suggest me hoe to lose belly fat.
I had my gallbladder removed 2 weeks and 2 days ago. I'm still not able to eat solid protein very well and my belly is so swollen on the right side. I also look as though someone beat me up (very bruised). I had gastric bypass surgery almost 5 years ago and lost well over 200 lbs. and I had a tummy tuck almost 2 years ago. Could the excess scar tissue be the reason why my belly is still so swollen on the right side? Will it ever go down? I had a FLAT stomach before my gallbladder surgery and this is really irritating me now. Also, bowel movements have been regular since the day after gallbladder was removed.
I had surgery 4 days ago. Top incision is really painful and my tummy is so swollen and hard. Surprised I have no follow up - just told to get my stitches removed at my local surgery on day 10. I am now on my computer having to google what to expect with recovery etc.
My second post. I am a size 8 so find it really difficult to live with a swollen belly 10 days after surgery. I can't fit into any of my clothes. I am amazed I can't find any medical explanation for this.
Today is day 10 after my gallbladder removal, it was done laparoscopically, with the gas. The puffed gut due to gas went away in about 4 days, and my bowel movements were fine on day two... ( I did not use narcotics only tylenol and advil for pain)
how ever, the incision at my belly button is stinging and is more swollen than a few days agos. It does not look infected or bruised even, just swollen, however, it is hot to the touch.
It almost feels like I pulled open a few stitches inside, hard to describe the discomfort is a stinging or sharp pulling or maybe even a poking feeling from inside right next to the belly button.
