I am switching from depo to merina (iud) tomorrow. Are there any worries I should have other than the cramps and spotting? I have been on depo for 14yrs and my hormones are all over the place.

Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum,
Benefits of being on IUD include lower risk for pregnancy, no to minimal changes in hormonal levels, reduction in period cramps with lighter menstrual flow, can be used while breastfeeding, return of fertility faster after removal (as compared with other birth control). Risks or disadvantages include mild to moderate pain during insertion, cramps & backpain for few says after insertion, spotting between periods during first 3-6 months, irregular periods during first 3-6 months, sometimes heavier periods along with worsening of cramps, slipping out of IUD, increased incidence of infections, embedding of IUD in uterine wall or perforation. If you get pregnant with IUD in place, then the risks include ectopic pregnancy, severe PID, miscarriage, early labor & delivery. Discuss the risks and benefits again with your treating gynecologist and re-confirm if you are right candidate for its use before going ahead with the procedure.
Take care.
