Q: switching from cows milk to formula

I recently switched my 9 month old to cows milk with a vitamin supplement, she seemed just fine with it for the first couple weeks but as we head into the third week she seems to be extra gassy, with too many bowel movements, not quite diarrhea though. I was just wondering if it would upset her stomach further to be moved back to formula. She had been on parents choice gentle formula. I had originally switched her because she has an enormous appetite and has been tolerating all kinds of table food very well.

If you want to switch to cow's milk, it's best to wait until they are one year of age. The digestive system is still not quite developed enough at 9 months to handle breaking down the proteins in straight cows milk. I definitely recommend staying on the formula until she is one and then trying cow's milk again. You can give her as much table food/ jarred baby food as she wants.

2 weeks is how long it generally takes for the milk to do damage to her system. It will probably take an additional 2 weeks to repair itself. It could also be that she has an intolerance to cow's milk that she will not be able to get over until she is much older.

Yeah what the above poster said is exactly right. When they are a year you can take them off formula and give them Cows milk. They even have a formula out for older kids for ages 9 months to 24 months as well.

Your daughter my have a sensitivity to cow milk it would be the protein in it that is likely causing the tummy upset try her on a lactos free milk with the same fat content or a soy milk but when switching make sure even cows milk you are using Homo cows milk and you should not need the vitamins except maybe iron and iron alone could be hard on her little tummy. Why would you put her on a vitamin supplement? Did you doctor tell you too? My best advice is to get back on the formula and like when you started her on solid food one at a time you do the same with milk. At 9 months my girls doctor said you could change your formula into milk from a cow one feeding at a time to help the transition. Have you change completely over to cows milk? Question did you breast feed? If you did do you remember how she reacted when you drank milk? For your little girls tummy when switching make sure you do not add to many knew things at once then it is hard to tell what is causing the problem.
I had twins they did great chnaging over no issues my youngest was allergic to cows milk so every baby is different.
Good luck
remember always try or add 1 thing at a time it is easier to know what is the problem.
let us know what happens.
oh if you did not breast feed no big deal(just did not want you to feel bad as Ihave

Thanks Angel, but at 9 months...definitely out of the question for some moms at that point. Teething, squirmy kids: sometimes breast milk just isn't enough either: what is best is what the mom and the child are comfortable with doing. Bravo if you can breastfeed that long, bravo if you can go against the crowd and say "I need to do what's best for me and my child."

According to the nutrition guide giving whole milk is okay at 9 mths. And it is great if you can breast feed. But if you can not go longer than 3 weeks that is fine too, or not even brast feeding at all is good to. I had a very bad experience with being treated horrible by nurses and people who do not understand that there are times when women can not or can only did it for a limited time. NO ONE should ever make a woman feel bad because she has stopped or can not breast feed.
Breast milk is the best because it is natures way of feeding young. If you can no longer breast feed do not worry about it. I personally only breast fed my twins for 3 weeks and the had my milk and formula as my milk never came in for them at all. My youngest had to stop breast feeding at nine months. I needed medicine that was not good if you were breast feeding so I had to stop.

Our pediatrician was very strict about no cows milk until our son turned 1. He said cows milk doesn't have a lot of nutrients that formula does and their digestive system isn't developed enough to handle the milk. I would switch back to the formula.
