Q: swelling after strained back

Hi all,

I did yoga a couple of months ago and I really strained my back. Right now I have swelling in my mid back on both sides and in my sides. The muscles in my back and in my sides feel hard. This is really affecting my breathing badly. I went to the doctor about 6 or 7 times and he told me it will heal on it's own. In my last visit, he told me that my muscles had spasmed and that's why they had become hard. I recently read somewhere that exercise helps in healing muscle strains etc. So, I try to jog everyday and stretch a little bit. Am I on the right track? Will the muscles heal on their own due to exercise or do I need to something else?

All answers will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello John,

In my opinion it is time (past time) that you seek advice from other doctors. In fact, advice from 2-3 of the very best spinal surgeons in your area.

AND by all means DON'T try to be your own docrtor. Yes, exercises can help, but they MUST be under the direction and guidance of a very well qualified physical therapist. AND you must do those exercises at the PT center so that your therapist can make sure you are doing the excercises correctly.

I am not a doctor, but until you get the advice from the spinal surgeons I would suggest that you NOT jog. You may just be doing more damage to your spine.

Thanks for reply !!
Hi Rich T,

Thanks for the reply. But the doctor had already done x-ray and saw that my lungs, spine and ribs are fine. So, I don't know if my spine is involved in this injury anyway whatsoever. But, please advise what I should do next.
Thanks in advance.

Hello John,

And unless you get 2nd and 3rd opinions from spinal surgeons you will not know if your doctor has made the correct diagnosis.

One really needs to get "validation" from more than one doctor.

Hope all goes well.

Back stretches
Hello John

It sounds as if you are on the right track and I think your doctor's advice seems sound.

I've found that stretch exercise do help the muscles to heal quicker. They're especially important to 'loosen' the muscles before other exercise, such as jogging. The right stretching exercises help to strengthen the core muscles and reduce tension.

I've benefited enormously from regular back stretches.

If you don't get any satisfaction after doing the exercises for a while you could always try a chiropractor chiros reckon that the joints in the spine tend to become fixated after a lot o stress but be careful you will need to find a good one.

Hello John,

My advice - Don't play doctor with your body. You can do more damage to your body doing the wrong exercises.

Seek the advice of a spinal surgeon, and that means a spinal doctor with MD after his/her name.
