i feel that i have difficulty when around people...like during lunch when i would swallow it would be a little difficult and sometimes u cud hear me swallow expecilly when drinking. Im always so afraid to swallow cuz i know i will make werid noises. it basically doesnt go down smoothly its just uncomfortable b.c i feel everyone can hear whats happening in my mouth. It usually happens ONLY when i think about it so i thought its axiety related. But other then difficulty swallowing...my throat hurts when i swallow and tends to get dry every once in a while..not usually,,but rite now it is so thats why i mention. Is this really a medical thing or sumthing i just need to not think about and deal with!

Have other people told you this or do you just think that they can hear you swallow? Remember that it probably sounds much louder to you than it does to them. Do you hear other people swallowing? If you can't hear them, they probably can't hear you.

Since it's only when you are around other people (right?), it's probably anxiety. That can cause your throat to dry and tighten, making it difficult to swallow, or even speak sometimes. If your throat is dry all the time, are you on any medications? Many meds can cause dry mouth and throat. If it happens at other times (not just when you are around other people), you should see a doctor to make sure something else isn't going on. Even if it is only around other people, you may still want to talk to a doctor about it for either anti-anxiety pills, therapy, or just relaxation techniques so you can stop your throat from closing when you start to feel it happen. If you are aware of it, you can take control over it.

I hope some of this helps.

There are a variety of causes of difficulty swallowing.. Many of them are not serious... Some are acute such as throat infections, etc. It does seem as though a social anxiety could be causing this with you BUT one of the warning signs of Cancer is difficulty swallowing so I would definitely have it checked out by an MD. Better safe than sorry.

Try to remind yourself that since you can't hear other people, they can't hear you either. And even if they could, they wouldn't care. Don't focus on it and it probably will go away.
