Q: Swallowed large amount of gum
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 18th, 2009
My 4 year old son swallowed about 30 pieces of gum throughout today. Obviously his stomach is hurting to the point of crying. Was on toilet but can't go. I can hear his stomach/intestines girggling loudly. Is this reason to call the doctor? Or can a high fiber diet help this?

Hello and welcome to eHealth Forum!

Yes, if the stomach is gurgling a lot and your son is unable to pass motion, there is a chance that the gums he swallowed have formed a ball or lump that is obstructing. If it has not resolved up till now, and your son is not passing stool, please consult a doctor ASAP. It would also make sense to go to an ER.

With time, the gums may pass out. Watch for them in stool. Even if you cannot see them they can pass out. More than a high fiber diet, a balanced diet with plenty of water will be helpful. Hope this helps. Take care!
