Sudden, temporary swelling and pressure at the jaw hinge.

I was chewing fruit, on the left side, when suddenly, the area around the left jaw hinge swelled up. I felt pressure in my left ear, also. There was no pain, and the swelling dissipated within hours. This episode has recurred three times since then. What is causing this phenomenon? How can I prevent it from happening again?

Sudden swelling of jaw while eating
I had a similar experience - I was eating a veggie burger after my jaw had experienced some unusual spasming, when the area around the left jaw, back towards the ear and along the side of my face suddenly and very visibly swelled up. It occurred a couple of times, to a lesser degree after that, and my ears have felt particularly blocked. Would also really appreciate a reply about this. Thanks

This sounds like a stone in your salivary gland, you will need to see a doctor to confirm it. The stone in the duct is stopping saliva from flowing into the mouth when you eat and chew. When eating and chewing, the gland works hard and makes a lot of saliva. The blockage makes the gland swell up because the saliva cannot pass through. After a meal, the saliva has time to seep past the stone. The swelling and pain then settle down. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for the reply. You are spot on - I went to my excellent dentist who referred me to an ENT specialist who checked and confirmed that my duct had been blocked (although we are not sure if it was a stone or something else caused by the low-level ear infection that I had at the same time).

He advised me that if it kept recurring it might be a stone and would possibly have to be removed, but so far so good!

Thanks again,
C

I have noticed a swelling in my left Jaw, I have no pain, I was worried about it as i taught it might be something sinister, or maybe a dental problem. However i just remembered i was a an 18th birthday party last Sunday and my daughters boyfriend banged his head into mine at some force by accident. I just remembered that it was some bang and my teeth banged really hard together. Could this be the problem with the swelling and if so do i need to see someone about a doctor or a dentist, could i have done some damage.
