A few years ago I had a sudden onset of panic attacks. Though at first I did not know what they were. I had a stange metallic taste in my mouth and starting feeling hot from feet to my head. Rapid heartbeat and a feeling of impending doom. I was scared to death of dying all of the sudden. I wound up in the ER a few times because I knew I was dying. It was awful to have them tell me that the cardiac tests were normal. I was not normal. I would get so panicked I would just walk back and forth at night if I awoke with one or just look around me if it happened during the day wondering how everyone else could be going about their day so normally. My doctor figured it was panic attacks related to menopause! I was put on Celexa and they slowly eased and went away. I have not had one in 3 years and have stayed on Celexa. I am now through with menopause and would like to stop the medication. Should I? Has anyone had an experience like this?

First of all, there's nothing wrong with staying on medications such as Celexa if it's helping you. Doctors recommend that once you have control of yours symptoms for at least six months, then you can start to wean off...have you consulted your doc about this change?

No I haven't. I am a little fearful. I would hate to start the attacks again. Maybe on my next visit I will discuss it. Thanks for your advice!

Metal Taste and Menopause
Sweetpea,

Your concerns are very legitimate and experienced by many women... so you are not along... first of all.. if you taste metal.. that's your body's way of telling you that you are experiencing sadness, grief, and maybe even depression.

Depression is ONLY when your energy to manage your stress is exhausted... Depression is a depression of Mental Emotional Energy... Exhaustion.

Since your symptoms have been addressed by Celexa,

Start working on your root causes for this sadness... You are likely also experiencing

1. skin irritation
2. breathing difficulty
3. constipation
4. second guessing yourself.

To offset the underlying root cause of your state... simply fill your days with things that BRING YOU JOY. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF FOR ONCE. You probably have many people you have been nurturing for decades... STOP IT. Take care of yourself now.

There is a complex explanation as to why this is the right next move for you... Believe it or not... its NOT good advice for everyone... There are times in life where taking care of your loved ones IS the best thing you can do for yourself... NOW is not that time.

Thank you so much for your advice! Your are right on the target about me taking care of everyone else. I am slowly realizing I need to take care of me first. It is a hard mind set to change but I am working on it. Thank you again.
