Sudden loss of hearing

I had an major inner ear infection over a month ago that gave me really bad vertigo and a very sudden loss in hearing. I was told it was a viral infection that would have to run its course. After being off work for 3 & 1/2 weeks the vertigo is basically gone, but my hearing is very muffled. I went to a hearing clinic to have my hearing tested and was told that the eardrum and bones were fine, but it appears that the virus has affected my inner ear Nero-sensor. Does this mean my hearing will never get better?
