I am a 25 yr old female taking a beta-blocker for migraine prevention. Unfortunately, this considerably lowers my blood pressure. There are moments when my pressure drops suddenly and I am no longer to function. When this happens, I feel extremely weak, as if I'm going to fall. I become unable to concentrate, talking becomes difficult (I have to think about how to form a word and can't say what I'm trying to say). If I try to eat, it feels like I'm choking and can't swallow. This is a very scary and uncomfortable feeling. I've never fainted though, but symptoms are serious enough to be noticed by others (I had a friend insist on walking me home, which was only a half-block away).
I am wondering what I can do when this happens to bring myself back to a functional level (especially when I am not home)? For example, a diabetic whose blood sugar is too low can eat something sweet. Is there such a solution for blood pressure? My neurologist wants to continue taking the medication because it is helpful (the first one that actually helps after trying at least a dozen others). She has warned me to be wary of heat and sit down as much as possible in hot places (eg. the metro, church, crowds). With summers being extremely hot and humid here, I need to find something that helps because it is approaching fast.
Thank you for any suggestions!
