Hi I am about 10 weeks pregnant and was on suboxone 8mg before i found out, then my doctor switched me to subutex and have been slowly weaning off, i started to be on just 1 mg subutex monday, and started experciening a lot of withdrawal, just sweating cramping legs, and just feel like crap ever since i have been on just 1 mg. So i called dr and now am back up to 2 mg but i still really want to get off this, just dont want to go through withdrawal , is it safer for me to just stay on 2 mg or should i just keep trying to wean myself down gradually i am so frustrated b/c i just want to be off thhis stuff i have been on for 21/2 years now just never at this low of dose, a lot of it is just mental i think. Has anyone been through this before what do u suggest i should do , i just want to what is right for my baby please help!

Hi Laura18440,

As you well know this is a powerful drug and has side effects on a grown mature body, can you imagine what effects it would have on a fetus? As with any drug, on or off, are side effects. Just as being pregnant has side effects, (nausea, vomiting, weight gain, etc) all of these are pretty normal for most. Your doctor according to you reduced your intake to 1mg then you went back up to 2mg? Because I am sooooooo into mothers taking the very best of themselves and giving their unborn child a fair and fighting chance to come into this world, as healthy as they can, I'm going to be a little rough on ya. Here goes, as a mother-to-be, a child's well being overrides any inconvience a side effect (unless it is a matter of life or death)such as, "crampy legs, sweating, and feeling like crap"...if this is all you are worried about...think of what pernmenant damage this drug could be doing to your baby. Put your big girl pants on, take the bull by the horn and at all cost protect the health and life of your unborn child. That's what mother's do, Child first, ourselves second.
This is for a lifetime, they are precious gifts that God has allowed us to have and we need to act accordingly. congrats on being a Mom, the most important and best job in the world.

God BLess,

Faded Rose

P.S. Consult your physican before switching or changing any medications. Keep all of your appointmenst with your OB/GYN. Have a happy, healthy baby.

I really don't understand how anyone can come on hear and give such nasty advice. If you have NEVER been in this predicament , Who are you to say anything . I'm a past drug addict and still working everyday of my life to stay sober . Us addicts are very selfish people and when an addict admits they have a problem and wants to better themselves and make it easy for them as a mother to be MORE POWER TO THEM .. It is NEVER easy especially being pregnant and addicted to anything to admit there issues . So GOOD for them . You should Never put another one down being a mother myself and being on the subutex as well and giving birth to a baby being on them my daughter came out PREFECT so until you have been there please DON"T say anything unless it's positive.

See u say do what is best for ur child. That she needs to put her big girl pants on. This is were ur wrong. If she stops taking the medication and goes through withdrawal it will kill the baby. So if u don't know what ur talking bout don't tell ppl what they need to do. I agree don't do anything harmful tht may hurt ur unborn baby but this is the case of life or death to the baby.

I do not understand ppl that give advice when they do not know what they are talking about! I understand where Faded Rose is coming from, but she has NO experience with addiction during pregnancy and the info she is giving you can cause harm to you AND your baby! Do you realize that just as the mother is having w/drawals symptoms, SO IS that baby inside her? Do a google search for withdrawals during pregnancy and they will tell you that it can cause MANY problems for the unborn baby, including premature labor, fetal distress and even death. You SHOULD NOT go through withdrawals during your pregnancy, it is safer for yourself AND your baby for you to continue to medication than to try to wean yourself off and have w/drawals symptoms. What usually happens is you decrease your dose to as low as you can tolerate so that you DO NOT have any withdrawals, and you stay on that dose until after the baby is born.

What does the doc who prescribes the subutex say? Again, these docs can get a certification from an ONLINE course and they really have no CLUE what they are doing! My first pregancy, I almost lost because I was trying to do the same thing you are, getting off the meds because I thought it would be safer for the baby that way, I was once again having active w/drawal symptoms which put me into premature labor, he was born 6 weeks early, w/muconium in the fluid and he still suffered throught withdrawals even after he was born. My second son, it was a whole different story. I got down to as low a dose on the medication as I could without having any withdrawals (each person is different, there is no "opitmum dose") and he was born perfectly fine and did not rate on the COWL scale (the scale they use to measure withdrawals) enough to be considered having w/d. Please check out these websites, they will have the info that you need.

putting your "big Girl" pants on has NOTHING to do with using suboxone while pregnant or weening off of it! Just lowering your dose can have a worse out come then just stopping it all together. I understand people having NO clue about addiction and the horrible things that come along with it, but these posts are here to help people not judge them and not to put your feelings out there. We know we as addicts aren't the best of people but just the simple fact that you are on subutex or suboxone and not heroin or someother drug is a plus! you are already doing something to help you and your baby!

Going through w/drawals during pregancy can cause many problems for you AND your baby including death! DO NOT listen to the poster above who is mistaken about what she is telling you. Trying to get off the suboxone during pregancy not only causes YOU w/drawals, but your baby as well.

What does the doctor who prescribes the suboxone say? What about your obgyn?

It is a medically approved and HON code approved website that will inform you about taking suboxone during pregnancy.

From a personal experience, I have had babies both ways, going thru w/drawals trying to get off the meds during pregnancy and chosing to stay on the meds during pregnancy and BY FAR it was better on both myself and my babies when I didn't put them and myself through w/drawals.

Withdrawals caused my first son to be born 6 weeks early, with meuconium in the water because he was under stress from the w/drawals. He was very fussy and cried alot and was just plain miserable. Whatever bad feelings I felt while going through w/drawals, the baby felt it too.

My second son was born just fine, he didn't even have to be weaned off the meds. I was able to get down to a low enough dose and still be comfortable (no w/drawals) that he was not addicted to them when he was born. Worse case scenario, they have to slowly wean the baby off the meds after they are born.......that sounds a whole bunch better than putting your baby through the tortures of w/drawals and or possibly causing miscarriage or death.

Hey, Congratulations on your new arrival! I hope all is well? I am 33 weeks pregnant and was on subutex for about a year when I found out! I quickly weaned down to 2 mg a day by around 14 weeks along and then any time I would try less I would go into withdrawals like you said so I just had to make the leap from 2 mg's. The feelings you start having about 24 hours after last dose are about as bad as it gets! The wd's are really not that bad they just last forever (about a month). Mild diarhea, insomnia, and sneezing will last 3-4 weeks. Only the first 4 to 5 days off do you feel the restless legs, skin crawling, and cold sweat crappy feeling. You can def. do this if you really want. There are 2 other women on this forum that were pregnant and weaned theirselves successfully under a doctors advice. If you think there is no way you can quit and not go back to taking/using then please don't quit!!! It really is a mental thing though, but if mentally you are not ready it is completely understandable. I was told the earlier in pregnancy I quit the better, but if there was a chance I would use something else then I shouldn't even try to quit.

I am 5 months pregnant.. I quit my subutex 3 weeks ago. This thread is dead but maybe somebody will come across it as i did. First 2 weeks, absolute hell. After that the worst is over, its all mental. Anxiety mostly. Sleep returns after 2 weeks, the sweats and chills and all that fun stuff goes away, and yes, u WILL get ur energy back!! If 3 weeks is all i have to do to get my life back and not have to worry about a pill, im def doin it. I didnt want to stop sub, believe me i justified it in every way. No taper , and at 8 mgs a day i did it. The withdrawlw will pass and u will feel 75% better in 3 weeks. My baby is fine, in fact when i was withdrawlin i kept eating and drinkin n stayed comfortable as possible and baby was fine! No xanax no clonidine, i just went all natural. It feels amazing to b sober again like before i even knew what drugs were!

It's nice to hear feed back. You hear all every detail of wanting to quit subs, and how bad one feels while going through it....however only few return w/ the good news...maybe because they feel so good about quiting the subs, they can't bare the thought of what's going on in the threads. Anyway, thank you for sharing. I found out I was pregnant just 3 days ago. I am so nervous I take subs I get on the street, and am not under a doctor's supervision w/ the subs. I don't take that much. Last Summer I quit it was hell week, and weeks two and three were pretty bad too..but not as bad - mostly tired, etc. I made the mistake by hanging out w/ an old friend, then habbits circled back, and I have been taking about 4 mgs a day sometimes more. Since I found out, I decided to take 1mg morning and night. It's so early in the pregnancy I am hoping for the best of course. I had an ultrasound just yesterday -it's so early they couldn't see anything. I am thinking this is the best time to wean off since nothing has formed yet. If it wasn't for the urine test, they would have thought I wasn't pregnant. I am eating healthier, high protein, I purchased joint juice, and just have moving around and taking showers. I will follow up w/ everyone. I hate the subs. Had I known this was going to be my life, I'd have chosen a different path it's been about 3 years. I just want to go to a place online to find those who have gotten through all of this. I promise to return and give answers, just cause it sucks...there is no one to relate.

I posted the thread about 3 weeks off subs. Well i started again. I too get em off the street and i am very scared about that. I dunno if i should try to get on a legit script or stop again. The worst part is nobody knows i started again. My bf and family think im off. N im afraid if my daughter is born withdrawling.. I will let everyone down. I dont know what to do. I am making an 8 mg pill last a week. I only take tiny pieces.. As when i started again i only needed a l crumb and i was good. I started again cuz it was there and i said well maybe once in a while n ill b ok. Im 30 weeks now and my baby girl is doing great. I too am scared because its not a legit script and i fear so bad they will take her away. Idk what to do.

subs
you need to go to the er at a good hospital (or possibly a sub dr.) and tell them whats going on and get on them legally. cys will get involved if your baby is born with subs in her system. and suboxone is very dangerous to your baby because of the naloxon(narcon)in it. so u need to make sure ur only taking subutex. im 9wks and on suboxone and trying to get to the hospital that my obgyn referred me to because im getting mine off the street as well. my best friend had her frist baby on herion till 6months than methadone and her second on subutex 8mgs a day and benzos and both born completely healthy without withdrawls. but thats not typical. a low dose especially thru the third trimester is very importiant.

I am in the same situation im 32 weeks also an was on pain pills i got clean when i found out i was pregnant but then the father of my baby got sentenced to 5 yrs in prison a couple weeks later an i dont have family an ended up doing pain pills again to deal with it i switched to subutex cuz its safer than pills while pregnant i want to be off of them but i get such bad depression an anxiety about every thing that im scared to lose the baby from it i also get them off the street an have not told any docs out of fear of them taking my baby a friend of mine just had a baby as was on subutex also they did drug test her specifically because she told them she is a recovering heroin addict, i was always told subs do not come back on a regular drug test that they have to do a specific test for them and that was proved to be true when my friend had her baby cuz they never knew so i recommend that if you cant get into a doc to prescribe them which is wat im trying to do also, but you do not want to mention them or they will try to take the baby an when your baby is born to breastfeed in the beginning to ween him off on his/her own so that the baby does not withdraw

To be honest if she can do it without methadone I personally would NOT DO IT but who am I , No one and if she was not incarcerated she would most defiantly be better off with the subutex but if she has a chance of going threw really bad withdrawal she might just have to go on methadone and for the time she is in there maybe they would both be better off .. So Good Luck 2 you ALL

Stopping Subutex while pregnant
I was a heroin addict for about a year and decided to get clean on my own. I take about 2mg of subutex a week, but am also afraid of them taking my baby when it is born. My OB is aware of my situation and recommended I see an addiction doctor to be prescribed to the subs, but have been told they cannot help me since I was not prescribed to them already. I weened myself completely off before, but started again out of pure stupidity, then found out I was pregnant. There seems to be nobody who will help me if I am not their patient, but will not accept me without a past record of being prescribed. The last time I stopped on this dosage amount I was completely better on about day 4, and lasted about a month before starting again, for no reason other than I felt like it at the time. Against the advice of every doctor I call, I am going to stop again even though I am pregnant. I am afraid since I am not prescribed, but my doctor knows about it, that they will test specifically for the subutex. I just want a healthy baby and to be free of this addiction, but since I got myself clean, no addiction doc seems to want to help me at all. They have even suggested methadone. Why the hell would I go to a worse drug? I believe it is all about money to them, or they would be more eager to help. Congrats to all that have and are trying to stop, and I will continue to post to let mothers to be know how my stopping works out. I have a few free days coming so I am going to start Sunday and hope to have some more advice later in the week. No matter what happens with me though, we are all different, with different addictions. What works for me may not be okay for someone else. Do not let anyone tell you that you are not doing well when you are on subutex. Us past addicts to heroin know how great it would feel to give in and just do it again, so if you are fighting that urge for your baby, be proud of what you have accomplished. I am hoping withdraws will be minimal like before, and the baby safe. If I could find a doctor who would help, I would go that route, but they all either want to keep me on, or need a ton of money just to see them. Since I can't afford it, no one seems to care so I am going to do what I know I can and hope for the best. I do have some saved back in case it feels completely harmful. Good luck to us all!

Subutex and pregnancy
Withdrawling from subutex doesn't just cause crampy legs and a little discomfort like "rose" above said; it causes nausea and vomitting with no appetite and loss of sleep meaning complete insomnia, diaphoresis, chills, abdominal cramping beyond painful with diarrhea which leads to dehydration so tell me "rose" how is all this not dangerous to a fetus? Also I had a very well respected dr who is in addiction specialty tell me that pregnant women on 8mg of subutex at time of delivery and they honestly have to be taking 8mg in a 24 hour period who deliver their babies have babies with no withdrawl!!! So I researched it online and over and over found story after story about women delivering on subutex having babies that have NO withdrawals at all...

Hi, Laura I want to first start off by saying CONGRATS !! I give you props for weening yourself off and tell you that whatever your body feels the baby feels as well and YOU have t do what is right for you and the baby . Everyone is different when it comes to detoxing so DON'T let anyone make you feel bad about what you are doing . It takes a lot for us drug addicts NOT TO BE SELFISH and for you to be thinking of the unborn baby in you takes a lot , so i just suggested to take one day at a time and that is all we can do . You should feel very proud of yourself. I'm also in the same predicament as you , i also just found out i'm pregnant i'm 2 months and 4 days and was on suboxone 8mg/2mg 2 tablets a day and i just got switched to Subutex 8mg 2 tablets a day but i only take one tablet so I'm also weening off but to give you some reassurance my 5 year old daughter was boring on suboxone but I skipped every 3 days and only on 2mg and she came out PREFECT . So please don't worry to much Razz I know it's hard believe me cause every baby is affected differently but I also Have many friends that were pregnant while on subutex taking 2 pills at 8mgs a day and they all came out PREFECT no withdrawal . so i hope that gives you some releif as a mother to be while on subutex .. Good Luck and again Congrats

I am 22 weeks. I was taking 20 lorcets a day when I found out I was pregnant. I found a Suboxone dr who prescribed me 16 mgms of subutex a day. I have weened down to 1/4 of a pill which is 2mgms. That was super easy. At first my ob/gyn said to get off of them. Now he said to stay at a low dosage and that would be safe. He doesn't want me to go through withdrawals. So since I have a legit prescription is there any way child protective services will want to take my child from me? I have permission from my ob/gyn to stay on it. If that's the case should I try to stop to avoid that from happening?

3rd Trimester and just starting subutex
Hello all I will be 33 weeks pregnant tomorrow. I was on 30mg of oxy's a day for the past 4 years. I had a legal script and my midwife knew I was on meds throughout this entire pregnancy. I have been asking her from day one about weeing off or at least looking for a action plan. She seemed to think I would just be able to ween off cause I was not on "enough to W/D". Well that proved to be wrong everytime I decreased my dose I would get very sick with Withdrawls and preterm labor would start. Finally I was refered to another dr and they put me on i20 mg of subutex a day. I am very worried about what my baby will endure. I feel like if my midwife would have been more proactive earlier on we would have had more of a fighting chance of getting off or at least being on a much lower dose by the time she gets here!! I plan to self ween down to 2 to 4 mg a day but for me this is not going to happen over night especially since I don't want to kick start labor and end up with a premie who still has to endure the withdrawl pains. I hope all of you ladies are proud to be making a better choice for your babies. Does not matter what your posion is "herion, pills...ect" we are all facing an uphill battle. I plan to try and find somewhere I can post a journal of my subutex experience and hope that it reaches someone and is helpful. If anyone knows a website that I can create this kinda blog/journal any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am 10 weeks pregnant today, and have been on Suboxone for about a year. As soon as I found out I was pregnant, my doctor switched me to Subutex. Even though he tells me it's safe, the thought of a drug that hasn't been studied in pregnant women being passed to my baby is terrifying. I'm currently taking 3 mg per day, and am weaning down slowly, but I'm afraid the damage has already been done. My boyfriend is frightened as well and makes me feel guilty for remaining on the drug, but I feel as though tapering down slowly is better than stopping altogether and risking miscarriage. I've noticed that on days that I space the doses out, I tend to feel worse, and am scared of being completely off. I know that now that I'm pregnant, I am expected to be completely selfless, and do whatever is best for my baby, and I do, in every other respect, but I'm finding it difficult to combat this. I wish I never would have been put on this stuff. It's a whole other addiction in itself, only, street legal. And my baby is left to suffer the consequences.

HELP WEANING
I'm hoping someone who has successfully completed weaning themselves off subutex will be able to give me some recommendations on how they dealt with issues such as lack of energy as well as loss of appetite...I'm 17wks pregnant and only take about 1mg/day but everytime I try to go a full day without anything, I feel like I can't get out of bed. If I need to just take a week off of work, I'll do it, but I was hoping to find some natural remedies to those particular w/d symptoms, as well as the sleeplessness and nausea/cramping I feel...I don't want the baby to have to be dealing with any of this either so Im hoping to do it as quickly and painlessly as possible, so anybody's experiences would be helpful! I know it's safe to stay on throughout pregnancy, but I feel it's something I personally need to do before delivery so I can be totally worry-free about these drugs, as I have NO desire to go back to using my old drug of choice...

suboxone and preganacy
If you want facts on suboxone and preganacy please check out Marjorie Meyers from Vermont. She had a lecture all about it and if you are on the medication when becoming preganant you will have to increase your dosage the second and third trimester, understand, now two are on this medication. If your obgyn and md doctors tell you to cut back, they don't know what they are talking about. I know someone first hand who was on suboxone, only tow to four mg a day, and both doctors said cut back if you can...This was the worse advice for her, she still is waiting for her baby, borned in the middle of November, no tests were done but he was having so called signs of withdrawls, as far as the nurse said and the pedi dr agreed. Now her baby is on morphine at another hospital and being weened off, YOU NEED A VERY GOOD DOCTOR and Dr. Meyers and others at her facility have dealt with this matter for years, most doctors and people don't know or understand anything when it comes to drugs and babys...check it out..Trying to Help before to late!!!
