Q: Subacute viral encephalitis
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 25th, 2009
On March 1st 2008 I began a common head cold. I was congested, weak and extremely fatigued for five days. March 8th 2008 I began experiencing extreme nausea that rendered me incapable of standing. It would attack in waves throughout the day and was immediately followed by waves of extreme vertigo, earaches, hot sweats and rapid heartbeat. I was bedridden for one month and eventually the symptoms lessened but did not fully go away. I then began experiencing odd sensations in my head and body, a sort of disconnect with the ground and a thick fogginess in my head. I constantly felt pressure weighing down on my head and after a month of these symptoms I began having anxiety attacks because I had to concentrate so hard just to perform everyday tasks. After four months of experiencing all of the above problems my symptoms lessened and my stomach problems began. My mother, aged 56, has experienced the EXACT symptoms excluding the stomach problems. What have we contacted?

Current medical status: For the past six month I have experienced major stomach problems that consist of persistent nausea, heartburn, indigestion, discomfort when any pressure is administered on the stomach area, pain or discomfort right below the sternum, reoccurring bowel problems that begin with hot sweats and extreme nausea and lead to numerous bowel movements in a very short period of time (no blood in stools and stools vary from solid to soft depending on how often I go in one day) No stomach cramping however audible stomach gurgling and constant bloating and gas. Initially symptoms were severe however over a six month period they have decreased only slightly in their severity.
Current medical treatment: Three trips to Emergency over 10 month period. Four office visits with two physicians. Blood tests administered four times (liver, h-pylori) all results negative. CAT scan, ultra sound, x-rays of my intestinal tract all proved negative. I was put on Nexium for one month and Dicetel for two once my stomach problems became severe. Both proved ineffective. No other medication was administered.

According to the symptoms you reported, you might have experienced subacute viral encephalitis. The condition occurred after the viral rhinitis which spread to the nervous system. The sensory nerves (smell, balance, odd sensations) were obviously affected. Also, the fact that your mother had the same symptoms indicates that the condition was infective. The symptoms of viral encephalitis can either disappear when the body is strong enough to fight back, or the outcome can be fatal.
