stuffy nose during the severe headache

My husband has been dealing with severe headaches for about 2.5 weeks now. He told me he thinks it may be a sinus infection.. but the only true sinus problem is a stuffy nose during the headache. They wake him up in the morning.. and happen many times during the day. He finally got so desperate tonight that he told me he wanted to go to the ER. I was relieves bc when your husband is in tears bc he is hurting so bad.. you want to get him help! Well we get there and they diagnose him with an ear infection!! Come on.. really? That's what causing my husband to have such bad headaches he lays there in total pain? I'm not convinced. Please help!
