Q: Strokes and other neurological problems
asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 28th, 2009
I recently collapsed in the house and started fitting slightly for approx 1 minute. For the next 1.5 hrs I had difficulty remembering my name, DOB and current date. After aprox 2hrs my memory had returned but I was finding it difficult to remember things. After admission to hospital I felt a warm sensation in the front of my forehead also sensitivity to light. The warm sensation is still present after 4 days but the sensitivity to light has disappeared. 2 days after passing out I have lost mobility in both my right arm and leg. I was given a CT scan today and was given the all clear, no blood clots, signs of a stroke or tumours. My consultant has put the incident down to stress and recomended ocupational therapy. Does this sound accurate or could it be something else? Any advice would be greatly received.

According to the data you reported (temporary loss of memory, increased sensitivity to light, warm sensation, lost mobility in right arm and leg), it seems possible that you might be experiencing a neurological problem.

A stroke might be responsible for this condition. The blood clog that might have caused it, might have been already decomposed when the scans were done (blood clog starts to decompose within 12 hours after forming). No data was given about how many days exactly had passed before the scans were done. The blood clog might have been small and contraction of the affected blood vessel (which might have been related to stress) might have additionally contributed to reducing the blood vessel diameter and the blood vessel flow consequently.

The symptoms present in a stroke always depend on the area that is affected and on the degree of damage done to the brain tissue. If the damage was minor the symptoms might have been more or less transitory. Most of the symptoms in a stroke tend to disappear or at least to improve within two weeks. The symptoms that are left are treated with occupational therapy. It might take time for the symptoms to improve, so please be patient.

What is most important is to detect the possible causes for the stroke (advanced atherosclerosis, high levels of fat in the blood, stress etc.) in order to prevent other future strokes which might turn out to be more harmful.
