Hi,

My mom recently had a stroke due to a tear in the catroid artery. The stroke was on the right side and as a result she has weakness on her left side. She is also very irritable and is unable to sleep at nights. She acts like a kid, always calling the nurses for every and anything. She also fabricates stories and thinks she is in a different country. From experience would these conditions disappear and would she be able to return to her normal state.

The prognosis following a stroke is related to the severity of the stroke and how much of the brain has been damaged.
Also, there is period following a stroke when the incidence of new stroke attacks are possible.
Your mother's symptoms are characteristic for interruption of front brain circulation that comes from carotid arteries (motor, activity, sensation, thought, speech, and emotion are affected)
Generally, stroke can cause five types of disabilities: paralysis or problems controlling movement; sensory disturbances including pain; problems using or understanding language; problems with thinking and memory; and emotional disturbances.
These disabilities can be overcome if the rehabilitation program is performed, beginning within 24 to 48 hours after a stroke, and may last for months and even years.

Best wishes!
Marija
