Has your friend had another episode coughing up blood? Is she in pain when it happens? I too have had this issue since 2005. I have had about 10 episodes since then in past 5 years but never had pain. I did however feel as if I was drowning because flood filled my lungs. That was scary. I went to the ER the 1st time and was admitted for 3 days, they did battery of tests and could not find source of bleed. I have been to ER for a couple of the other episodes out of sheer frustration even though I knew they would just send me home stating they did not know what was causing it but because it stopped and I was not in pain, nothing they could do. I even went to the extreme of bringing the bowl of blood that I coughed up with me to the Emergency Room, they were in shock at amount of blood but again, could not figure out where it was coming from and sent me on my way. I even tried different hospitals.

I was very pro-active and still am as far as trying to figure out where it''s coming from. I have been to every specialist (pulmonologist, gastroenterologist, ear nose throat MD, I could go on and on) I have had every test done, xrays, scans, scopes, blood work...they don''t know what the cause is.

What I do know is that when each episode occured, I was under enormous amount of stress. I asked every MD if that could cause it and they said no, only ulcer would do that and all tests showed no evidence of ulcer.

I am convinced that stress is the cause and until I''m proven otherwise, I think stress can do it. I am only 33 years old, started when I was 28 yrs old and still no answers.

Hemopsysis
I too have been coughing up blood for the past six years. The first episode was alot of blood, probably about half a cup the first time, but every subsequent episode appears to be less, but eneough that it freaks me out. Like you, it is not streaked blood in mucus, but bright red, and all bood, with clotting in it. My cat scan does show what the Doctors are now saying is Bronchiectasis. However, the area of Bronchiectasis appears to be a small area in my lungs and my new pulmonologist is not convinced it is coming from that site. He is saying that I need to have a bronchoscopy during the next episode so they can better pin point where the bleeding is coming from. I also had a cat scan with contrast to see if I might have alteriousvenus malformation (AVM). But no malformed arteries were found on the cat scat, however it could still be a possibility, and I am wondering if your Doctor has looked into that? What I am also finding interesting about your situation is that you feel it is stressed related. Prior to each of my episodes, I am feeling stressed, upset and feeling that irrational and sort of pms feeling, very tired, and usually a headache a day before. But I always felt it was part of the symptoms, and a precursor to coughing up blood. However, I am starting to feel that stress could be causing the symptoms. I also felt that perhaps spicy hot food to be a culprit too, although the doctors say that has nothing to do with it. I am going to see a surgeon next week just to explore the possibility of taking that small area of bronchiectasis out. However, I still have to have either an angiogram or bronchoscopy during the next episode to be sure that is the site of the bleeding. You mention that you have had scopes, have you ever had a bronchoscopy during an episode? if so, how uncomfortable was the bronchoscopy?

Questions unanswered
I too have been coughing up blood due to what I think is stress. I went to the hospital because have been having panic attacks left and right and they took X-rays and everything if they were to find anything they have to let us know what's going on... they didn't see anything wrong. I don't feel any pain when I cough it up or anything and it's not in my mucus I think it may be coming from my gums because my gums bleed and sometimes when I spit it out it's bloody soo I think it may be coming from there... but if I have another episode i'm gonna have to make a trip to the hospital because this worries and freaks me out!

I was rushed to the ER twice with the same episode of waking up coughing blood which was with enormous amount, I was scared. No symptoms whatsoever. The first time I was brought to the ER, I was released because my X-ray and blood test were okay and coughing stop. The next morning, I woke up coughing again and the ER doctor requested a CT. The initial finding was pneumonia but since I have no other symptoms, I am not convinced. Now, I have this fear because my primary doctor did not find anything wrong either. Maybe the stress factor is the culprit, I have to admit, I have been stressed out physically and emotionally. I hope that the source will be diagnosed accurately. I wish to be in contact with the two of you who posted to this forum, please let me know.
