Strange lips after braces

Hi,

I got my braces removed approx. 7 months ago and my lips, during and post treatment, assumed a really strange shape, and nothing like the previous one. Obviously, this is because of teeth behind them. However, even stranger is that they assume new shapes everyday, or every other day, giving me different appearances (i.e. one day, I can be good-looking, and the other, completely ugly). I have a feeling that the lips are attempting to assume their previous shape, however, every time they go from a relaxed to a stiff position, they yield a different result (this occurs mostly in the morning). This has been confirmed by my family members. It is causing a lot of anxiety, and I was wondering plastic surgery can help me restore my previous lips' shape; the one I was happy with.

I talked with my orthodontist, and he refuses to correct the situation, despite the before and after photos showing definitive, and horrible, changes. And further, given my age, I want to avoid getting braces again; though if it is the only option, I would be compelled to.

Certainly plastic surgery will correct the situation but I would wonder if you necessarily have to go to that extreme for a solution. Depending on where your teeth are located now as opposed to before it may be advisable to have it done again but perhaps something like Dental veneers may be the way to go or some botox(although that seems to be more of a temporary solution). I would visit a general dentist and perhaps another orthodontist that has an oral surgeon very close to him. Hope that helps.

Hi,
My teeth were out of shape i.e., my canines were not in proper order and were present above the lateral incisor. This affected my complete face.My lips seemed to be bulging out and raised this made small gaps on the both sides of my lips. After getting braces,my teeth came in shape and my lips too came in shape but now the effect seems to be reversing as the lips have started bulging once again. Please suggest something for me as i am really worried for my face.
Thanks.

Hi. So it sounds like you were happy with your appearance of your lips just after your braces came off. Have you been wearing your retainer daily? Have your teeth begun to shift back? If they have you will need to see your orthodontist to see if he can move them back with or without new braces. Otherwise your retainer should be worn to stablize your teeth and lip structure.

I'm just curious! I've recently had a similar thing happen. Did you dentist try to fix crowding and pull down your canines without extracting any teeth? I've been told that the reason my lips (and the area between my lips and nose) is bulging out so much is because my orthodontist did that. The only way I can correct it is to extract teeth and "finish" my orthodontic treatment so everything pulls back in and the lips follow.
