My 11 yr old son has Strabismus, Myopia and Astigmatism (-11). He has had four surgeries and doesn't have 3D vision. His eyes seemed to be aligned right now but have not been for a year. (He just had surgery)
In the past we used sheet magnifiers, lighted magnifiers, CCTV and enlarged print. The high magnification seemed to hinder his ability to learn to read. He began resisting ( he also didn't want to be different from anyone else). He has not used any vision modifications for the last two years but is struggling with the volume of work that comes with the 5th grade.
It is IEP time again (sigh) and I want to reintroduce vison modifiers. The print is getting smaller and I feel it could help his comprehension. I think at times he spends so much time just concentrating on the words that he loses comprehension in the end. Have you experienced this? Is it true?
He is quiet and never complains. He doesn't share what he can or can't see or how he feels. His teachers think that he could try harder and shows a lack of attention. could this be because nothing is modified?
I think he needs to learn to self-advocate. I would like to reintroduce vison modifiers and see if he can express a like or dislike. What has worked for you? Or what could have? Is this the right approach? I would like to better understand my sons disability and help him with it. Please share your memories of childhood and beyond. I want to be prepared now and for the future.
