A couple weeks ago my 13 month old son started to cross his eyes. He has been in perfect health, with perfect vision until just 2 short weeks ago. His eyes were perfect on his first birthday (June 25th)
Around mid/lateJuly he started to occasionally cross his eyes while he was eating at the table. My Husband and I thought it was strange, but it was infrequent and we knew nothing about it.
Another week passes, and my sons eyes are consistantly very crossed, and his left eye turns inward towards the bridge of his nose when he tries to focus on anything near or far. For a few days, I would see his eye make the turn and then stay in position. I have watched in the last couple weeks, my sons appearance totally change without reason. His left eye is completely turned inward now. He looks like an entirely different baby.
His behavior has been unlike his usual self as well. He does not want to make eye contact, and seems easily frustrated. He's very fussy now (has NEVER been a fussy baby, ever) He aggressively rubs his left eye like it's bothering him. He has been walking since 11 months, and was on the verge of running. He's very stable and coordinated, but in the last week, he has been stumbling and coming up short on grabbing objects. He gets mad easily, and whines a lot now. His new vision problem is certainly affecting his development.
I took him to a doctor on Friday (August 1st) to ask for a refferal to a Pediatric Opthamologist. I did not get a refferal, they told me he has Strabismus/lazy eye and if he didn't outgrow it on his own by age 2 (1 whole year away) that she'd reccomend him seeing an eye doctor at that time. She gave me very conflicting information. "Wait until he's 2, even though early detection and treatment is critical to save his vision" I left, very confused of course.
All weekend, I researched on the net about Strabismus, Ablyopia, Esotopia etc etc etc.. Learning that children do NOT outgrow this, period. He was not born with it, and this developed at 12 months very rapidly over a very very short period of time. He NEEDS to be evaluated by a proffessional. How is it possible for him to show zero signs of this until 12.5 months, and then suddenly he's completely cross-eyed, with esotopia almost overnight?
I got the run-around with my insurance company trying to get him into a Pediatric Opthamologist. I finally found someone who was willing to see him, but they are booked until November. I don't think he can wait that long, he's getting significantly worse by the day.
I took my son into a different pediatrician today (August 5th), who agreed with me on the urgency of getting him into a specialist. He said my son has Strabismus and Esotopia, and was dissapointed that he was not given a refferal on Friday. Apparently my son is also likely suffering from double-vision and/or headaches. The new Pediatrician called the Pediatric Opthmologist and told her about my sons situation. She said she would like too see him in 2-4 weeks, so she will make sure a slot is made for him in the appointment book sooner than November. Si 2-4 weeks soon enough? He's getting worse, by the DAY.
I'm so scared, it seems like this happened overnight.
What can I expect to happen? Will my son ever look the same again? Is there even a good chance they can re-align his eye properly? Can they straighten his eye out again, or do they just save his vision at this point? This is happening so fast, like I said this was not apparent 2 weeks ago. Neither my Husband or I have any eye issues, nor does anyone in our families. It just doesn't make sense. He didn't have a stroke or seizure, it's not glaucoma or a tumor either. Does anyone have a success story they could share with me? Has anyone else been down the same path? Please, I need some advice from someone educated on the process, or who has gone through the same thing with their child (or themselves)
Thank You for any input.
