Q: Stomach swelling due to an ulcer or IBS
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 23rd, 2008
Over the past 3 years I have experienced serveral episodes of stomach swelling. It happens at random times and it is very sudden. My stomach starts to hurt, then all of a sudden it starts to swell painfully to the point where I hunch over. My stomach gets visibly larger, it kind of looks like I am pregnant. I usually just lay down and try to sleep it away, and it usually goes away after a couple of hours. I can't think of any causes, it happens usually at night, long before I have eaten. and it doesnt happen while I am sick either. What Could be causing this, and what can
I do to stop it from happening?

The symptoms you describe can be connected to irritable bowel syndrome accompanied with a lot of gas. Another diagnosis that can be suggested is an ulcer. Although the swelling in such big proportions as described is not characteristic of an ulcer. You might want to visit a gastroenterologist for further examination.
