Q: Stomach pains
asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 21st, 2009
My daughter is 16 and has been having severe stomach pains for about 4 months. The pain is right in the middle of her belly and she says it is a sharp stabbing pain. We went to the Dr. last week and he did some blood work and put her on an antacid pill. Her blood work came back fine and she has taken the pill each morning for 7 days but the pain has been worse than ever. She is a very active outgoing girl and just has not been herself lately. Her periods are regular and relatively light, appetite is good and we have not noticed any particular food adding to this condition. She was on an antibiotic for about 5 months to treat acne, do you think this could be the cause. She has not taken the medicine for about a month. I feel bad for her as she says it just hurts all the time now. Would love to have your opinion. Thank you so much for your time.

Dear Worried Mom,

It is a terrible situation to suffer and to watch another suffer. Blood work may not always identify a problem. Unfortunately, it appears that the antacid pill is not working very well for your daughter. It is normal for her to not be herself if she is in a great deal of pain and experiencing distress.

My recommendation is that you take her to a qualified gastroenterologist to identify the cause of the pain in her stomach. The doctor can run additional test to identify what condition is causing her pain and to provider her with treatment.

Best wishes,
