Hi
It may souund stupid, but it is something that is really really affecting me and i dont know what to do. I am a student nurse currently at uniersity and i get a lot of loud noises from my stomach/bowel area; this isn't really a problem for me when im in places where there is a lot of noise, but in lectures, seminars, meetings etc i can't cope. It is really causing me a lot of stress and anxiety and has got to the point where i am missing my education over this. I am a quiet person and i find the more i am getting stressed over this issue, the more it happens in lessons.
I can feel myself tense up the day before i have to go to uni.
My breaking point was last night, i was in tears for at least 2 hours threating about going to university.. (as it happens i havnt went). This isn't just a recent thing, i dropped out of uni 3 years ago because of it.
I know it is part mental because the noises get worse as i get more anxious, but i just dont know what to do. I know im a trainee professional; but i have always been the type to rather let things get on with themselves than go to a doctor; i find it embarassing at the best of times... and so i know i need to go to doctor but i dont know what to say; i dont want to be fobbed off and told im stupid when this really is affecting me badly; i dont want to ruin another chance i have worked so hard at over something like this.
Please help

also.. i have searched the internet and am aware that other people also are suffering with symptoms the same as this which can relate to IBS.. i do not know i have this; although i suspect i do.

Hi!
There is nothing embarrassing about this issue being presented to your physician, since it can indicate a certain gastrointestinal disease.
This stomach growling, or rumbling, can result form incomplete digestion of certain types of food, like carbohydrate-containing foods including milk and other dairy products ( condition known as lactose intolerance), foods containing gluten, protein in wheat, barley, and rye (celiac disease), or incomplete digestion of fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, and high-fiber whole grains.
Since you have noticed that stress makes it worse, it is very possible that this symptom is a part of IBS (IBS episode can be provoked or made worse with stress and anxiety).
Another reason for this frequent bowel noises is carcinoid tumor (it is accompanied with diarrhea, hot flashes of the neck and upper chest).

For the right diagnosis and treatment visit a gastroeneterologist!

Best wishes!
Marija

bowel noises and discomfort / abdomen
no its not silly atal im havin de exact same problem! im only 17 and since ive been in my first yr of secondary school i started havin this problem. and it is DEFINITELY provoked by stress and anxiety because when im at home im relaxed and i could eat all around me and my stomach wouldnt flinch. however in school its a different story. seein as it has been bothering me so long i figured that if i stopped eating alot of food at lunch then my stomach cant make noise because theres nothin there so i usually just eat lik a bar or something.but i still am not rite. evryday i get home my stomach/abdomen is slightly swollen and hard and its very uncomfortable and the embarrasement of the noises its not even funny i am actually petified of sittin in a classroom!and when i feel my stomach swellin up then i know it wil make noise i panic and the anxiety makes it more louder for some reason like i dont know! the only aid i have is when i feel it swelin up i ruffle pages and make noise and sometimes it makes me relax and then the spasm passes with little or no sound but its not way to be Sad im in my last year of secondary school now and im already worried about what i will do in college i dont think il be able to cope i reli dont.
