I have struggled with heartburn for quite some time. At first I would take rolaids when needed but I guess it just got progressively worse. I started using Prilosec OTC as it is cheap and plenty effective. Well this evening I had something new and frightening happen to me. My heartburn has always been the same, I get a slight warm feeling in my upper chest and I know to take rolaids to relieve this. (if I forget my prilosec). So tonight with no prior symptoms I suddenly burped and had a little acid come up, but this was not your usual bit of reflux... It set my throat on fire, It took my breath badly, I had to calm myself and breathe slowly through my nose. It was extremely painful and I took 4 rolaids, 2 swigs of pepto and drank milk to help. I'm going to see my Dr. asap but, I wanted to know what the internet could reveal. I've never experienced such a thing and it was horrible. Even after and hour It is still slightly painful to swallow. Its like i drank concentrated HCl.

Acid Reflux Answer A4012
It is likely that nothing serious happened. Larger amount of stomach acid probably entered the pharynx and pharyngeal muscles contracted very strong in order to push the acid back into the esophagus. This strong muscle contraction probably caused this prolonged pharyngeal pain.
