Good day I am 23 years old.My periods started irregular when I was younger, but I went on the pill and I stopped taking it about a year ago.....because I wanted to see if I could get regular periods without the pill, unforunatley I have not and my menstruation cycle still does not regulate after taking the pill. The first few months it regulated but then it skipped a few months...but now I've had it for 3 weeks. Its starts as a brown discharge with a very bad odour and then only becomes normal (no heavy bleeding, no painfull cramps)

Please can you help me and tell me why I am having it for 3 weeks? I have made an appointment with my gynae (this will be my first visit) but I just need some information in the meantime.

thank you

Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum,
The causes for irregular period and prolonged bleeding could be many. It can range from ovarian problems, to ovulation issues, to hormonal derangements etc. Only after a careful examination and further investigations (complete hormonal analysis, blood work-up, ultrasound scan etc) done by your gynecologist the exact cause can be made out. Go ahead with visiting your gynecologist. Get started on treatment as indicated by your examination and investigation results to help with regulating your periods.
Take care.

Thank you for your response Dr Paul.

I am extemely uncomfortable with the prolonged bleeding is there a pill or some sort of medication I can take to make it stop, if yes, can I get it over the counter at a pharmacist?

Do you think its a good idea for me to do so before my gynae visit?
