Q: Staring at me while I sleep

Ok, the first time this happend I just thought it was odd, but now it is creeping me out. My 2 1/2 year old foster child (whom I am in the process of adopting) keeps waking up during the night and standing next to me. I wake up and he is just standing there staring at me. He has a glazed look on his face. The second time this happened (last night) I screamed because he scared the living daylights out of me. He took off running down the hall and ran into the wall.

What on earth could this be? He has been with my 5 1/2 months, and never has happened before (that I know of....even more creepy!) He doesn't say anything, but jsut stands there like with a satanic look on his face.

giggles a little, it is a tad funny Smile
could it be that he is sleep walking and is unaware that he is doing this?
i only suggest sleep walking, because you said when you were startled and screamed, he took off running and he ran into a wall. now, i dont know too many people-adults and children who run straight into walls lol
so he could be sleep walking.

have you talked to a family doctor about this?
maybe since he is a foster child, he is just making sure that there is someone there for him always, and no one is leaving him alone. he could have developed separation anxiety within the past few months.
i would talk to a doctor or pediatrition about this though if you already havent.

good luck

I did call the pediatrician today and they said sleepwalking. I asked her if she could make him stop staring at me and she laughed and said no. Don't feel bad about giggling I laughed all day when I thought about how fast he ran down the hall and into that wall.

Hi Melissa

When I was young, I had a friend who did the most amazing sleepwalking. He would actually hold entire conversations with people, and it would only be when they realised he had that same glazed expression, and said unusual things, that he was sleepwalking. Once he stayed over at my house, and my mum saw him by the front door in his pyjamas. She asked him if he was ok and he said "yes, I am just going home now", at 12 at night!

If he is a foster child, consider also the possibility that he may have worries and concerns about whether a parent will always be there for him, ie attachment problems from the previous family / parent. Maybe he is worried that you might leave him on some level? I know you wont, but as you know this kind of stuff is very big for a little boy. I prescribe extra cuddles, and maybe a lock on your bedroom door!

When I was about 2 years old I used to wake up at night, and I'd get lonely so I'd go to my parents room and stand next to their bed doing the same thing. I think he probably wakes up at night and instead of crying or anything he goes to you. He probably gets lonely or scared and takes comfort in being near you. I doubt its sleep walking if he's standing there looking at you. He probably waits for you to wake up and take him back to bed.
