stage 4 bone cancer

my father is 60 yrs old, has had back pain for sometime, we and first intial doctor appts wrote it off as his bad disk from an injury years ago acting up again..

unfourtunatly, we have now ( 3 days ago )learned that it is stage 4 bone caner with a large tumor on his hip and the cancer has spread with spots on his, lungs, liver, spine, stomach and colon. they immediatly put him in pallitive care to get his pain under control, the doc looked at me and said " your father has cancer and will die from it, it is about quailty of life now, not quantity ".. with that said they are releasing him home on wednesday to start radiation treatment...

my question is when the doctor is that blunt and those are his exact words, does anyone have any idea on what kinda time frame he might be referring to ?

Life expectancy differs for different types of bone cancer and its grade.
When metastases appear the life expectancy will be dramatically shortened and could be defined as being alive for less than a year.
