Q: Spitting green phlegm , heartburn , and anxiety
asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 18th, 2008
Hi,

These past few days/nights ive been finding it extremely difficult to breathe. I also have a really tight/crushing feeling in my chest which seems to get worse at night and is relieved a little after sleep. I havnt been anxious so im sure its not caused by that.

I have green phlegm in my spit in the mornings. When i try to take a deep breath my lungs hurt and i have frequent chest pains, sometimes in the center of the chest.

My throat also feels tight too and sometimes i get the feeling i need to burp but i cant and if i try hard its food that comes up. I also have heartburn quite frequently after meals. I get headaches too and i feel tired/weak. I did smoke tobacco for the first time about a month ago but havnt after that.

Also, these feelings arent relieved at all by my inhalers. Should i go to ER?

Thanks.

Certain of your symptoms like “tight/crushing feeling in my chest”, chest pains, tight throat, headaches, tiredness/weakness, etc could be due to anxiety but before blaming anxiety for all these symptoms, several other possible disorders should be checked.

Symptoms like green phlegm and heartburn can’t be due to anxiety. Spitting green phlegm in the mornings is probably due to an upper or lower respiratory infection. Heart burn is probably due to acid reflux.

It doesn’t seem likely to me that your symptoms indicate an urgent condition so they probably don’t require any urgent medical treatment. I believe that there is something more than simple anxiety (respiratory infection and gastritis probably) although anxiety can always be present and can make you feel the symptoms worse than they really are.

You may want to consult an internist about your condition.
