I sustained a midpoint spiral fracture of the fourth and fifth metatarsals on 21 May 12. Have been in a cast since then and no healing has occurred. Both metatarsals are aligned, just not close enough together for new bone to form. What supplements will help the healing, and what is an estimated time of recovery from surgery to pin both bones. Thank you.
It usually takes about 6 weeks for metatarsal fractures to unite. But, if there is a significant gap between the fracture fragments, that usually means that there is soft tissue interposed between the bones. If there is, the fracture will not unite. The soft tissue has to be surgically removed.
So, once the bones are together, it takes about 6 weeks for the bone to unite. Once the bones are united, then you will have to rehab the limb. The rehab can take several weeks to months. In some cases it may take up to 6-9 months before the final outcome is known.
As to what you should be eating: a proper balanced diet, with some extra protein, calcium, vitamin D, and magnegium.
Do not smoke. Smoking is probably the single most detrimental thing there is for fracture healing.
Be sure to discuss all of your questions and concerns with your surgeon. Good luck.
