I am 37 year old male in relatively good health as far as I know. I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis in my lumbar and cervical spine approximately two years ago. I have a slipped disc at L5-S1 and a bulging disc with bone spurs at C5-C6. I suffer from unilateral arm pain and leg pain in addition to my chronic back pain. Recently I noticed that my arms and legs appear to have gotten skinnier. I haven't lost any weight, so that is what has me perplexed. I did some research on the internet regarding spinal stenosis and I did find some information stating that one of the complications from the condition is muscle wasting. Has anyone else with spinal stenosis experienced this muscle wasting? Does anybody know if there is a correlation between spinal stenosis and muscle atrophy? Also, does anyone know if this means that the condition is getting worse? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You might want to post this same question over on the back pain forum, where there are a lot more people responding to spine problems, lumbar, thoracic and cervical.

At any rate, to answer you questions, muscle atrophy can be an indication that your spine problems are indeed worsening.

When was the last time you had an MRI on your cervical and lumbar spine?

When was the last time you saw a spine surgeon for the spine problems that you have?

What kind of advise and treatments have you had for the spine problems that you have?

If you have not had treatment in he past 2 years, have not had a very recent MRI in the past 4 months, have not seen a spine surgeon very recently, then you need to do the following.

See a spine surgeon right away for a complete evaluation of your cervical and lumbar spine.
Have the spine surgeon do new MRI of both your cervical and lumbar spine,
Then see what the spine surgeon suggests for treatment.

It is possible that the muscle atrophy that you have, if you do and it is not just something you think you have, will not improve, but it sounds like you may have a far more serious situation going now than you had 2 years ago.

Get it checked out right away.
